First off, the sign outside (menus as well) had “Monmouth Junction Kitchen”, not diner, although there is no mistaking that the place is a diner. Pretty cool inside as the place was bright, clean and decorated well, it immediately makes you feel good. We ordered the corned beef Reuben with a salad (had a choice of fries or a salad) and also had a choice of soup which was chicken with rice. In the picture you’ll notice that there was no coleslaw nor a pickle, we missed that it is provided by request only which was noted in the upper left hand corner of the menu. The server never mentioned it and we felt that this was odd, maybe it is a cost saving measure on the part of the restaurant. I know it was our fault for missing it, however, this practice is highly unusual IMO and detracts from the presentation, especially for deli type sandwich. We didn’t realize any of this until we were done eating and re-read the menu. Anyway the sandwich and salad were very good. A good amount of corned beef and just the right amount of dressing made the sandwich enjoyable without globs of dressing oozing out as others usually do. Next up was a chicken gyro platter that had a Greek salad and fries along with soup which was split pea with croutons. The croutons were optional and I’m glad that I chose to have them added. The croutons tasted like they were made in-house as they were extremely delicious in the soup. The soup was so good, I could just order it as a meal by itself. The gyro had a good amount of chicken with tomato, onions, lettuce and tzatziki sauce, overall it was very good. The Greek salad had chunks of feta cheese, more than expected and was very good as well. The fries were piping hot, lightly salted and crispy. I don’t know if I would have been able to get the coleslaw and pickle if I requested it, I didn’t need it as the platter had a ton of...
Read moreWe have been going to the Monmouth Junction Kitchen 2 to 3 times a month since the old owner opened it. Last night, for the first time in a while we tried a take-out order. When we picked it up, my wife wanted to ensure the order was correct. She noticed an “Open Food” notation on our bill for $3.25. They told us they now charge 75 cents for each container. We had 3 containers. Because the employee spoke broken english my wife left confused. After discussing what happened on our ride home. She called the restaurant to clarify our bill. They told us we paid $3.25 because of the 3 to-go containers because they are charging 75 cents a piece. Aside from being ridiculous, our containers should have cost us $2.25. Besides the poor math, what are they going to charge patrons for next? They might start charging patrons who eat in. Let’s see. They could charge a quarter for wiping your feet on the mat as you enter, fifty cents for cleaning your booth before and after you eat, 20 cents for clean dishes, five cents for each utensil and napkin. Maybe a quarter for a straw, ten cents for the paper your bill is on. They charge you for using your credit card and then they could add another nickel for the receipt paper. We buy containers for our business and I can assure you that an aluminum plate with a plastic lid does not cost them 75 cents each, so they are making an additional profit on people ordering take-out. I’m sure they would have some justification for this nonsense, but we’ll never hear it because we are eliminating then from our support of their local business. We’ll continue to support the other local businesses that aren’t so cheap. So if you frequent this diner, bring a calculator because they...
Read moreLet’s start with the setting. When you walk in, it’s like you walked into a time capsule. Pictures of the Rat Pack on the walls. Vintage I love Lucy memorabilia, juke box etc. We were welcomed and seated. The staff was top notch. I don’t remember our waiters name but she had two braids that went down both sides of her face. Her service made our experience that much better. We ordered our breakfast. Jay had the Farm fresh eggs, sausage , hash and toast with coffee. “Everything was is so fresh”, she said. She made me try a bite. She was absolutely right. I couldn’t wait to try mine. I order the Traffic Jammer. It is a combo of French Toast, pancakes, eggs, and 5 strips of bacon. Talk about send you to bed early worthy…… OMG…. We didn’t expect it to be so good. That atmosphere was great to sit and eat with you loved one. Enjoy each other. Enjoy the food. Even enjoy the people. I recommend this spot to any foodie looking for a full belly with no disappointments.
Ps. We went back the next morning. I saw grits on the menu. So I had to go back and try those out. Let’s just say. There’s somebodies grandma in the back…. Wiping her arm off, take made those heavenly grits. Cheesy with flavor. Jay had the Gyro Omelette. She said “everything is so delicious”. I totally agree. Stop in and tell them Sir and Jen sent...
