Holmes Hotdogs & Catering — Restaurant in South Carolina

Holmes Hotdogs and catering may be the best local restaurant you could ever have the pleasure of visiting. I first came here over a year ago and I knew then it was something special. If I had a friend from another country visiting, and I could choose one place to show them a true slice of what America should be, I would take them here without a second thought. Holmes has a small menu, and I believe it is perfect. Because of their small menu, I believe they are able to assure every single item on it is made with quality and care. They recently added a new item, the bird dog, to their menu. The bird dog features a chicken tender, pickles, and honey mustard on a hot dog bun. I thought the bird dog was incredible, and I'll be sure to get it again with onions next time. I would personally recommend their chicken sandwich, which is always piping hot and made to order, and their sausage dogs, which I personally believe are their standout menu items, especially with sauerkraut and onions topping them. Holmes has an atmosphere unlike any other restaurants I've ever been in, you can tell the owner and employees truly care about not just the quality of their food and service, but also the wellbeing of their community. I've never felt like I don't belong when I walk into Holmes. I've wrote all of this without even mentioning their incredible prices, which are comparable to other local locations, however the quality of the food, service, and everything else about Holmes is what makes this location worth so much more than any other in the area. It has been a very long time since we ate at Holmes and after eating there yesterday, July 24, 2024, we remembered why. Hotdogs, fries and slaw. The soft bun and weiner was great but the chili had an off-putting taste and you could hardly see it. For a whole hotdog, about a heaping teaspoon of bitter chili was put on it. Almost half of my hotdog had a small amount of chili liquid and no meat. Like it was rushed made just to get it on the plate with no concern that you were a paying customer. That slaw is terrible. Hard little square chunks of cabbage. It didn't even hold the slaw dressing to it and it ran all over the hotdogs and dripped onto the plates. A worker came from the back with rags to clean up. A customer asked where was the owner. Lady replied that he was on vacation again and she didn't think that he deserved it either. So much for...

I wanted to love this place so much. I looked up the reviews on Google and was soo excited to try their dogs. Well I was slightly disappointed. Their dogs were slim. And I mean pinky thickness slim. Their chili was gray and almost flavorless. Cheese….. couldn’t taste it. Their smoked sausage was good however. So if you’re going there I recommend getting that instead of the dog. Fries, par. Nothing to say there. First time ordering here and most likely the last. I know everybody’s tastes are different but it’s definitely not in my wheelhouse.
