Wally's Place — Restaurant in South Hero

Edit: they've botched my order 3 out of the last 6 times I've gone. I go every week, and get the same thing. This week i called and asked if there was a way I could help get my order right. The response: you should order correctly. Poor showing, service, and response.

Look, I get that there are better sandwiches places in the world. I've eaten at some. But context is everything, and on this island, Wally's is king.

First of all, the food is good and sometimes locally sourced, which I enjoy. They bake some damned good baguettes, too. The staff is extraordinarily friendly, in that way that islanders can be, even in the frozen north. The space is perfectly suited, you can sit down and eat with your two kids and expect them to have books and toys to play with on site, or you can hide in the corner and get some alone time with a window. The prices are right, even surprisingly low considering the quality. I wish they had more drink variation, but then again, I'm often happy with water.

The most remarkable thing? They never botch my order, and they're the most consistent place I've eaten at in a wide radius.

Bottom line: its a best buy sort of place. If you can find a better deal for quality food in the area, I'll buy you a sandwich myself.

Love this place! Ate there yesterday and went back today enjoying brunch both times (various sandwiches, all good). So why four stars? We opted to get take out sandwiches we could enjoy for dinner tonight, placing our order after eating lunch and "special ordering" things to our taste. This gave us great anticipation... then we pulled them out to eat this evening finding we got someone else's order - not ours. Sadly, they don't have the same taste buds we do. Whoever is missing the BLT on some sort of white bread and ham (or similar meat) on some sort of other bread, we know where they are (in our trash can). Whoever got our special made turkey w/horseradish mayo on a salt bagel and steak w/sauteed onions and peppers on a whole wheat everything bagel, I hope you were able to enjoy them. (sigh) It's a bit ironic (to us) that we left a $5 tip in addition to paying for food we'd never want, but such is life. One wins some and loses some. To others reading, yes, stop here - we loved it - but CHECK your order if getting something to go! Apparently people share names and the folks working don't double check if you answer to the name called. The person who takes your order is not necessarily the person handing them out and bags aren't see through...

I kid you not, one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. Now as a New Yorker, my standards for sandwiches are high, but I was so satisfied with this thing it took me out of google review retirement. I ordered the Veggie Pesto with mayo on rye and it absolutely hit the spot! Fresh, flavorful, well-balanced, and above all super reasonably priced!

Also got a massive iced chai latte for a spectacularly reasonable price, super good even from a boxed mix. The giant macaroon is darn good so far! Overall, this is exactly what I needed after a long night camping.

They're open plenty early compared to other spots on the island, a great place to stop for breakfast or brunch! Staff was super friendly and helpful. Their layout confused me a bit, just be sure to pay attention to the hanging signs. Seating felt a bit limited on the interior for a busy Saturday morning but the armosphere in there was great.
