My wife and I came in for date night a couple weeks ago and, oof, this place wasn’t what we’d hoped for. We’re not big on IPAs and sours but figured they’d have at least one non “aggressive beer” option. Maybe a kolsch or hefe or something. We got a sampler and weren’t fans of any of the beers. We both understand when we’re working outside beers we’d usually prefer, but we just couldn’t vibe with what we drank. I thought I’d like the pale ale but it was very, very skunky. But most disappointing was the food. It was….beyond bad. The pizza was legit inedible, we had maybe 3 bites. And we’re not picky eaters at all. I’m famous among my friends for liking food that is ungodly spicy (5 stars is never enough) and the spicy pickled veggies were so hot I couldn’t speak for 10 minutes after my first bite. The server took our still full plates off the table without asking how it was. As a former server, I was very surprised to see them take a 90% uneaten pizza off the table without even asking what was wrong, but whatever. We were still starving, so I went in and ordered a pretzel and cheese (thinking how could they mess that up.). After about 30 minutes the server comes out and said they forgot to ring in the order and the kitchen was now closed. They gave us a statement about how “sometimes these things slip through the cracks.” There was a brief apology of sorts but it frankly didn’t feel sincere. Also, it seems clear there is no “kitchen”, just the servers heating up food so it seemed to me they easily could’ve still made it. Then when I tabbed out they tried to charge me for multiple items I never ordered. They did offer to take five dollars off our tab for failing to make our pretzel but given how we mostly couldn’t eat the food we did receive, and also didn’t get the other appetizer we ordered, a five dollar discount felt frankly a little insulting. Just take the L and assume I won’t be back or offer to make an actual comp. So I declined their discount and just went home.
Edit: I’m surprised at the owners response. I was still upset so I did exaggerate a bit on my original review (though I 100% stand by my updated review above) but it’s a little rough to be called a liar on things that definitely happened. It seems they spoke with their employees who told them that they both asked how the food was, and also offered to comp “all” my food. These statements are wholly untrue. I have no interest in “trashing” any local establishment. Why on earth would I make something like this up? I live in the neighborhood and REALLY wanted to like this place and become a regular. But the beer wasn’t for me, the food was really, really bad, and I was very disappointed in my experience overall. I’m just trying to share the truth about my experience. I’d give it a second chance but it sounds like I’m not welcome back. ...
Read moreI thought the third time would be a charm...but no. Since their opening I've been in three different times, months apart. EACH time, no matter how many customers were there, busy or not, whether I sat at the bar or at a table, I was not greeted, and watched employee(s) pass by me repeatedly without a word for 3-5 minutes. When finally acknowledged I asked about a couple of beers on the menu regarding taste, etc. The responses I received didn't answer my question, nor was I ever offered a sample taste. I ended up leaving. I've bartended for years in the past and frequent breweries locally. We all have bad or busy days, but guys...I'm done. Three strikes and you're out. In response to the owner's comment: How hard is it to say to someone sitting at the bar 3 feet from you, whom you've walked in front of, "Welcome, I'll be with you shortly."? And I was NEVER asked if I wanted a sample even though I had asked about 2-3 different beers...he simply said he "had to serve someone else". Are you kidding me? C'mon. Be...
Read moreReview update since my review 2 years ago roughly August 2023. I’ve had been blessed with the opportunity of to return and again I’m blown away. This place has expanded meanwhile their customer service is great and look at the picture of their pizza! Just wow…!
Bonus Hot Tip! The suspension bridge is a MUST and only 10 mins away!
Of a nearly 2k drive from Chicago, this place was an unexpected gift. Kind folks from the bartender to the brewer/owner. Their style of sours is very unique in my humble opinion. They capture a Goldilocks zone of tart, sour, sweet, fruit, and in some cases spices. Their beers are going to win awards no doubt. And the ba sour is absurd in its simplexity (apologies if that sounds pretentious) as it is complex yet so approachable. It’s got a synergy of wood, fruit, sweet, and some funk walking a delicate balance to capture the palate. This beer is new glarus on ba steroids (beer nerd reference). I’m excited for a...
