From the moment we stepped into Mex 1 Coastal Cantina, we were whisked away on a delightful culinary journey that we're eager to embark on again. Situated in the charming neighborhood of West Ashley in Charleston, SC, Mex 1 isn't just a restaurant; it's a vibrant celebration of coastal flavors that leaves you craving for more.
The ambiance of Mex 1 sets the perfect stage for a memorable dining experience. The decor, inspired by the laid-back surf culture, creates a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at ease. It's an ideal spot for gatherings with friends, family dinners, or even a casual date night.
What truly sets Mex 1 apart is their unbeatable Happy Hour deals. As someone who appreciates great value without compromising on quality, I was thoroughly impressed. Their specials are not only generous but also feature some of the most tantalizing options on the menu. It's a fantastic opportunity to indulge in their offerings at an unbeatable price.
Now, let's talk about the star of the show - the Bangin' Shrimp Bowl. This dish alone is worth a visit. The shrimp are perfectly cooked, with a crispy exterior that gives way to succulent, flavorful bites. Paired with a harmonious blend of fresh ingredients and spices, it's a bowl that packs a punch and delights the palate in every bite. It's no exaggeration to say that this dish has become a culinary highlight for us in Charleston.
The staff at Mex 1 Coastal Cantina deserves a special mention as well. Their warm hospitality and attentive service made our dining experience even more enjoyable. It's evident that they take pride in what they do, and their passion shines through in the quality of service and food.

Read moreOn Saturday, October 12th, my daughter and I dined at MEX 1 Coastal Cantina, located at 2205 Middle Street on Sullivan’s Island. We started with the Triple Dipper appetizer, which featured a creamy queso with jalapenos, house-made guacamole, and a corn and black bean salsa. The appetizer was a solid start, with the guacamole being the standout for its freshness. We were also served a salsa dip and house made chips.
For our main course, we both ordered the Triple Taco Platter, opting for the same trio: the Bangin Shrimp Taco, Carne Asada Taco, and Baja Fish Taco. The shrimp taco was easily the best of the bunch—flavorful, well-seasoned, and generously portioned. The steak taco followed closely, delivering on tenderness and taste. Unfortunately, the Baja Fish Taco fell flat. With just a small, lone piece of fish, it lacked substance, leaving us wishing we had ordered another shrimp or steak taco instead.
My daughter’s side of rice and black beans was disappointing. The rice was undercooked, and the beans had no flavor, rendering the side inedible. I substituted French fries for my side, which were a standard but satisfying choice.
For drinks, my daughter had a refreshing non-alcoholic pineapple drink, and I kept it simple with water.
Service throughout our visit was prompt and friendly, and the overall atmosphere inside the restaurant was lively, with a great crowd enjoying the beautiful weather.
Parking was a bit of a challenge — I had to circle the block three times before finding a spot.
Despite the missteps with the fish taco and side dish, the excellent shrimp taco and enjoyable ambiance will likely bring us back for another visit...
Read moreLast week, my family and I visited Charleston for the first time; we asked a college friend for places to eat and Mex 1 was at the top of his list. His recommendation did not disappoint as Mex 1 Coastal Cantina, no lie, served some of the best Mexican food I have had in my life!
I immediately feel in love with the vibe of the restaurant: local hang-out, with a festive pub/sports bar feel. Our waitress, Jerrica, was relatively new but you would have never know it; she was warm, responsive, and knew the menu inside and out. For cocktails, my wife had the Pineapple Margarita and I ordered the Frozen Margarita — both were outstanding and STRONG. We also had the Triple Dipper appetizer which was as delicious as it was generously-portioned.
For dinner, I had the Baja Bowl with Bangin' Shrimp. Everything about this dish was just amazing. The pico, green onions, lime, and cilantro tasted so incredibly fresh, if I was told that they have a private garden in the back, I would've believed it. The shrimp was local, lightly breaded, and mouthwatering and the sweet and tangy sauce drizzled on top made for a savory pairing. Not to mention that the brown rice was light, fluffy, and flavorful as well. My wife ordered the Bangin' Shrimp and Baja Fish Tacos which were just as delectable.
Also, shout out to the general manager, Mark, who came to our table and was so passionate and hospitable. With the service, food, drinks, and atmosphere at Mex 1, it's easy to understand why he is in love with the place!
When we return to Charleston, Mex 1 may be our first stop from...
