J.R. Rhodehouse, BBQ about 6 miles out of Rapid City on I-90 toward Sturgis, touts a Texas style barbecue, smoked on-site, right out back.

Atmosphere is rustic with accents of sheet steel and 1880s photos and memorabilia. These people are Clint Eastwood fans, it looks like. The serving staff treated us like good friends next door. The cook can talk barbecue knowledgeably, all day long if you want to.

We had the sliced brisquet and the pulled pork. The smoke on the meat is over post oak, and they get great smoke into the beef and pork. Nice red ring around the outside, and a fantastic dark bark on both. This is to die for.

The rub on the beef brisquet was peppery and tangy, dark without being hard. The cap was tender and the fat was buttery smooth.

The pulled pork was served as a big chunk of pork from the outside, not fork shredded for us, so tender that it pulled apart with fingers or fork. Again the pork smoke was from post oak, significantly different from Carolina hickory smoke style. The fat had cooked out, leaving the meat perfectly lean without being fatty, dry or greasy. There were no bone chips or cartilage at all.

We eat barbecue in Central Texas frequently, and found the beans peppery, smoky, and flavorful. The beans were not pintos and had a tangy sweet sauce. Cole slaw was great. Potato salad was tasty and crunchy.

They served sliced pickles, white bread, and pickled onions on the side. Iced tea was bottled. Everything is over the counter.

We observed others enjoying the sausage and smoked turkey, but did not try it. BBQ Ribs looked excellent. We will make another trip for those.

Servings were generously large, and we left with a nice doggy box for finger licking later.

This is by far the best BBQ we have had north of Kansas, and has a definite Texas influence by way of KC. A definite must try restaurant to make a...

We spent a season a few years ago traveling around South Texas eating BBQ and let me tell you, J.R.’s definitely beats 99 percent of them! We ordered a half Gout because we wanted to sample it all!. It all came wrapped and packed beautifully and presented on a cardboard flat box (to go). After suffering through a long drive smelling the beautiful smoky aroma all the way home… The brisket was firm, but flavorful, with a nice bark. The pulled pork was to die for! Juicy, nice bark, tender… The ribs were melt in your mouth good. The turkey was tender and mild—not too Smoky like some are. The links were just right spicy, with cheese added in. They also throw in a half loaf of white bread or rolls. We went with the “house” BBQ sauce (vs ghost pepper), which actually transformed all these meats into what we both decided was a “spiritual” experience! It’s that good… And the sides were just as impressive! The beans were just right spicy for us, the rough cut slaw was impressive with just the right dressing and the potato salad was on point as well, South Texas style, no overpowering vinegar anywhere in the mix! Full disclosure— my wife is not a huge BBQ fan, but even this meal wowed her, and we still have enough for another meal tomorrow (no skimpy portions here!). Overall, one of the top 5 meals we’ve eaten during our travels across the 50 states! We will be going back...

FINALLY made it to this place... Been meaning to for quite some time, and let me tell you; I have been missing out!

I had the prime brisket with potato salad, and their jalapeno corn bread... everything was amazing!! the potato salad was on point, the jalapeno corn bread was worth the trip alone, and the brisket was "cut it with your tongue" tender... beautifully seasoned... a little heavy on the pepper (which is right up my alley). I didn't even feel the need to put any sauce on it.

The wife had the Pulled pork sandwich, with the jalapeno corn bread, and their baked beans.

Her words-"The pulled pork was tender and juicy. Very generous portions. The smoked baked beans were tender, saucy, and well coated in the smokey flavor. The jalapeno corn bread was phenomenal, sweet, with a slow roll of heat, I need a dozen of these ASAP"

The service was incredibly fast... after ordering, we barely got sat down and they were calling our name... I was impressed.

And, for as full the wife and i were by the end of it, very reasonably priced... the two of us were out the door for...

Best BBQ I've ever had. We're from Wisconsin on vacation and we have nothing this good back home. Wife got the brisket nachos with queso, wife thought they were going to be just OK due to the corn chips, rather than nacho chips, she quickly changed her tune and said they were the best she ever had, and she loves her nachos. We also ordered the 3 meat platter, pork/turkey/brisket with potato salad and it was bursting with flavor. Honestly some of the BBQ we've ever had. Corn bread muffins were moist and sweet. My sister ordered the coleslaw, it was like an Asian slaw and she couldn't stop raving about it, said it was the best she ever had and she's a foodie. The guest service was top notch, the owner came out and checked on us and chatted us up. They were really kind with our hyper kids too. It was so good we went back two days in a row. This will be a regular spot for us for years too come!
