I'm not a Jew,but I could play one on tv Why? Because I grew up around a lot of Jewish culture and have an affinity for it (Skokie IL was 2 blocks from my house) I have been to countless delis all over the country This one is pretty typisch (my family is German so even Yiddish comes easy) What is unique about this place is it's in one of the most "un-Jewish" places I've ever been (There is a small unassuming synagogue in Summerville but I doubt its existence and this place have much interaction) So being in South Carolina and staying in business probably means being strictly kosher would not be a sustainable business plan However this place will give you your fix The bagels were great Even the schmears were good and fairly authentic It has a variety of Jewish inspired dishes and the authenticity of taste appears to be winning over the hearts of the eaters We had a strictly kosher family friend who also traveled a lot. He stated his Judaism meant staying alive was imperative to his faith Although when traveling he did not seek out treif (distinctly non-kosher food) he allowed himself to bend in accordance to keeping healthy and alive as opposed to hungry and depleted I believe he would've found this place delightful and ordered a non -treif item and enjoyed as an attempt to Jewish cultural heritage It is a very fun place Nice indoor/outdoor seating Wifi Espresso Great bakery

Our sweet little old Granny turned 96 this week and had only one request- a coconut cake. We figured in 96 years she has probably had plenty of coconut cakes so this one had better be good. I called Charleston Bakery and Delicatessen for the job. My only request was "make it lots of layers." The lady I ordered with was so kind and genuine to talk to. And to say the bakers did their job is an understatement. This was hands down the best cake we have ever eaten- and Granny concurs. I wish we had weighed it- it must have been a solid 30 lbs. And it stood nearly half as tall as Granny herself. As I was leaving the bakery, the employee called out to wish Granny a happy birthday from them. 5 layers of moist cake and then the icing was so creamy and has a hint of almond that's just to die for! (Maybe the wrong metaphor for a 96 year old's birthday?) After 8 people ate cake, we had merely cut a third of it. And then Granny had a second piece before she left the table. We couldn't be more pleased with the service and quality we experienced this week. Thank you for making a sweet little old lady very, very happy on her birthday. (And yes, we do realize the 6 was on the cake backward at the point of the photo! Oops!)

This is a five star review for Chris and Dani the owners of Charleston Delicatessen and Bakery! I rolled up to the shop at 3:40 I tapped on the glass and one of the workers politely told me they close at 3. I said, “oh please don’t make me go to the pizza place!” I headed back to my car and Chris, the owner, came out the door and says wait wait What do you want? I said I’m just trying to get a sandwich I’m so hungry I just showed my clients six houses in a row and had driven all over God‘s green or acre in Charleston. I said I really want pastrami on rye and he said all right come on in. They serve me up the best pastrami sandwich with a smile after they were closed!! Chris and Dani if you ever need to buy or sell a house I will take care of you like you took care of me!!!! Thank you, Austin Smith😀

So I give this place a 3. But yet I am there almost daily. This place has good service and not one time have I had to push a complaint to be fixed. The issue I have the most is consistency. I often order the same items over and over depending on my mood. The issue I have is that my order is rarely presented the same. Often items are made slightly different depending on who made it for you. Sometimes my sandwich will come with cheese and sometimes not. Sometimes they drain the meat before putting it on the bread and sometimes they don't. (causing soggy bread), Most times the sandwiches are cut in half. Sometimes the sauce is forgotten and sometimes it's not. I mostly order to go. It breaks my heart to get all the way home with such good quality food and then find out that the person that made it that day got lazy and just tossed it together.

So yes they have some issues but I will continue to go there.I love the food and the staff at the location in Summerville are very very nice. I suggest better training of new staff and a focus on consistency. I mostly eat breakfast/ lunch. And I always take it to go.

The new dinner menu is very well made. A must try.

Update: So I go to get my fav sandwich today, and they tell me that they now do not serve them after 3pm. they change to dinner menu. So this upset me because again I can't count on consistency. Now I have to be there by 3 pm to get some of my favorite foods that they have been known for since they been open.

So I order my second favorite, the "Almighty Brisket". it's now a 13.00 sandwich on the dinner menu, It's more expensive than the sandwich I usually get, but it is bigger, it is "ALMIGHTY". Well. now it's served smaller for some reason. The same size as the French Dip. So it's still high priced, but they shrank it...lol. When this place gets their act together, I might go back..but for now M going from almost daily orders from there to not going at all. It's a shame, but I'm tired of making the drive to this place just for them to tell me they made ANOTHER change and I can't get what I have been craving all day. They made a big mistake getting rid of some of the best menu items they are known for by 3 pm. At least wait till 5 pm to start your high priced dinner menu, If you enjoy consistency or taste, quality, and menu items being still available, I would not go to this place. Sad, I loved that place at one time. Why change what is not broken. And this time the manager was...
