As I begin my 2018 restaurant / bar review project, please follow me as I will be visiting most establishments in the Surprise area (in alphabetical order) First up: Angela's Kitchen:
This restaurant is situated within the planned community of Sun City Grand and open to the public. The restaurant space itself is beautiful with nice views of the abutting golf course and accommodates patrons with outdoor seating. I have now on two occasions visited this establishment.
First experience (dining seating) began with being seated (indoors) immediately, but then waiting approximately 15 minutes to be acknowledged by wait staff. The dinning area was about 1/2 full. After reviewing the menu and ready to order, I was told they were "out" of my first choice. My second choice arrived overcooked and portion size was a touch dismal. The concentration seemed to be on plating the food artistically, rather than focusing on quality. Upon receiving my bill, I was "up-charged" for additional salad dressing. The servers explanation was that I had asked for dressing on the side - apparently that costs extra.
Second experience (bar seating). There is a half wrap around bar, multiple high table tops, televisions and outdoor seating Again the space and golf course views are quite nice. I sat at bar and was acknowledged within a few minutes and quickly received my first drink. The staff did not promote to me any drink or food specials that may be occurring during my visit. All was going well when suddenly the demeanor of the bartending staff went south. My observation of the negative behavior change seemed to coincided with the bar section filling in quickly. A patron sitting next to me stated Happy Hour had just started. The bartending staff on shift was far from enthusiastic. The conversations and behaviors of the staff behind the bar became incredibly unprofessional. Demeaning patrons within earshot of an unknown guest (me), gossiping about patrons and outright negatively commenting about gratuity amounts left. While ordering my second drink and asking for a menu, the bartender rudely addressed a patron sitting next to me with "Ah, you're just going to have to wait". I found this odd, as that patron had not even muttered a word. This bartender rolled her eyes at me and stated, "he is just a regular". As this establishment is within a planned community, one would conclude the majority of patrons would be residents of Sun City Grand; so why on earth would you treat these patrons in this manner? I ordered an appetizer and began to observe more closely the behavior of this staff. By the time I finished my second wine and appetizer, I could without a doubt, identify who was a regular patron vs not, simply by the unprofessional, petty behavior of the staff.
My overall impression of this establishment is not a positive one. I do not believe this establishment would survive outside the walls of the Sun City Grand community. If you enjoy having mediocre "pretty" food, slightly overpriced drinks and watching poor, unprofessional behavior, this is the...
Read morePosted to Yelp a week after service here. Finally posting to Google. This is usually a go to spot for my in-laws. My husband & I have been here several times with them & the food it usually good. Last night I went alone with my in-laws & the experience left much to be desired & it even left my in-laws reassessing their go to location. When we got there this place was packed, I just can't understand why. We were sat at a table crammed in between several other tables, & we were lucky if we had 2 ft. of space between the other tables.  My father-in-law doesn't have much to say on the topic of Covid but even he said "I guess social distancing isn't a thing here. These tables are so close together." To which my mother-in-law agreed, as did I. I have some pre-existing health conditions which leave me more at risk. We would have sat outside on the patio but it was much to cold last night. It was as though the owners don't think Covid is a thing the way they packed the tables & diners in. I understand Gov. Ducey removed capacity limits but this is just ridiculous! My MIL asked to be moved to a both & she was met with a snarky reply & eye roll "We're really busy I'll see if I can get someone to clear it." A few minutes goes by & we see 2 people clearing the table, once done we go & sit down. The bussers return & explain they're under 21 & can't touch the EMPTY wine glasses & EMPTY wine bottle & they'd have to get someone to remove them. Someone who I think might have been the FOH manager comes to clear them & sighs then & says rather loudly under her breath "You know you really shouldn't have sat here yet! This table wasn't cleared all the way." I almost said "If the tables weren't so crammed together as if Covid weren't a thing we wouldn't have felt the need to sit here" but I bit my tongue.
The service was painfully slow. A table was sat after us & got drinks & their dinner's before our drinks even came out. My FIL ordered the Filet Mignon Medallions & he said they were tough, gristly & over cooked. I ordered the prime rib & it was definitely not something to write home about. We have all agreed we won't be returning as...
Read moreThursday, Jan 29th....party of 6. We called ahead and were told 35 minutes. Got there and were told it would be a 30 minute wait. Headed to the bar and within minutes came in a were ready to seat us. Put us on the patio next to a large group of women celebrating a bridal shower. Not only were these ladies VERY loud but the more they drank, the louder they were and Angela's continued to serve them. We could not hear each other sitting right next to one another. Complained to the waiter and he agreed, but said he would tell the manager. Zip! We, like others, ate and exited as quickly as we could get the check. No attempt to reseat us or give us some form of discount for the problem. Stopped and told the manager and he said they had booked the reservation and promised they would keep so many ladies in check. Hum, not once did anyone come out on the patio to talk with them or stop serving drunks more booze. Told us it would be better next time and we all responded there won't be a next time. Angela's is always loud, but this was way over the regular noise and totally uncontrolled.Paying what we did for our meals, one would think mgmt could do something or at least TRY. Again, zip. We have been to this establishment many times in the past, but based on this incident and the mgrs response to our complaints, will not be back. Several other restaurants in the area that are operated in a more professional fashion and many of them are cost less for the same...
