Backside Brewing Co. Outpost — Restaurant in Sutherlin

The chalkboard sign outside, had "Pizza" written, as one of the specials & then the menu too, had a very nice selection of wood oven fired Pizzas. I was excited to try the Pizza, being we were visiting from up North in Oregon. I picked the Pizza, that I was eager to try, my dining partners were then ready to order too. The waitress came, asked what we would like & as soon as I said the name of the pizza, she said their pizza oven hadn't been working at all that day. I pointed out that the chalkboard sign out front, which was obviously written on for that days specials, had "Pizza" written on it. She said oh yes, brunch ended a little while ago. So, which was it? How did they serve brunch pizza earlier that day, when I was told that the Pizza oven was broken & hadn't worked all day? Yet, they served Pizza earlier for brunch!? Huh?! Ummmmm...yeah, well ok... Anyhow, I had her leave, so I could make s different menu choice. A large group came in & one of the female patrons literally sat & stared us down, mean mugging my Daughter & I, from the time she sat down, until we left, after we got done eating. I placed my new order, for a Cheeseburger with fries, my Daughter ordered a Hawaiian Chicken Burger with fries, her Husband ordered an Elk Burger with Sweet Potato Tots. All the food was good & the Waitress was nice, but why she or someone else, didn't go out to the front & erase the word Pizza from the chalkboard sign, puzzles me. Also, when she sat us down, she pointed out the menus location & never made mention, that the whole section on the menu for Pizza, was unavailable, she waited until after I placed my order for Pizza, to tell me! If my experience would have been better, I wouldn't mind going back down to Sutherlin to try the Pizza, but based on my experience, I won't go back. I realize that the patron giving my Daughter & I, such a mean & awkward staredown for the whole time we were there, is not the fault of the restaurant or the Waitress. If the Female Patron is a regular, my Daughter & I would not be comfortable in her presence again. As far as Covid precautions, no masks worn by staff. As far as other precautions go, Red pepper flakes Shakers, Salt & Pepper Shakers, napkins & menus, all on the table, being touched by everyone before & after us. The absence of the Covid precautions, do not make a difference to me, but it may make a difference to others, which is why it is included in my review. I, with numerous friends, on numerous visits, have enjoyed the food every time we have been there, however, the food is the only thing we enjoyed. For our most recent visit, we had the WORST server yet. Her attire was frumpy at best. She was dressed like she was going to a kids ball game. She wore some type of black shorts, black top (too much cleavage) under a red plaid shirt and a baseball cap. She was soft spoken and difficult to hear, which is not a good characteristic for someone who is a server in the food and beverage industry. There was no fun or pleasant interaction from the server. She just seemed to be going through the motions. The physical appearance was as usual, ok, (crumbs on the table of the booth we were in, which I wiped off). For a while the music was HORRIBLE. I inquired about the horrible rock music, as it was VERY UNSETTLING for a dining atmosphere, and could it be changed back to the softer music that was playing when we sat down. The server had a response of "um, well, we can't really control it, the songs mix up" and she walked away. When our food came , I was no longer feeling relaxed due to the horrible music, and could not eat. I asked for a box for my pizza. I waited for my friend to eat her meal. While I was waiting, the music softened and I felt a bit more like eating. I ate a bit of my now luke warm/cool pizza out of the to go box (I never received a plate to use for my pizza). I have had careers in several industries where customer service is top priority.(Including food/beverage) I will always prefer good or even mediocre food with excellent customer service EVERY TIME. Unfortunately, I find excellent customer service in the Roseburg and surrounding areas to be as rare as a bigfoot sighting. And, today was no exception. Food and beverage servers, you need to step up your game! Will we return, probably. But, definitely not as frequently due to the service and the horrible music. It was a half pleasant birthday lunch. Awesome place hidden off the highway. Do yourself a favor if you happen to be staying in Sutherlin or need a quick bite on the way through. Telling ya...the food rocks! I love local diners, much more even is brew pubs. I sat down..asked what was the best burger...was told the "Hawaiian". Sold. Ordered that and the fries (which were that cool pub fry with a coating on them). This HUGE 1/2 lb burger came out..double pineapple, brioche bun. Sucker was over 6" tall easy. With the sauce and how juicy the burger was I must have gone through a dozen napkins. Total heaven. Unfortunately I was in a rush to go to a wedding so deid not get to have any beers, but this is a place I would definitely come back too. Neat old building too. Server was super nice. Staff was super friendly. Price was awesome too. In a day where you are dropping 12 bucks at a crappy chain restaurant, for a buck or 2 more you can get an honest to god burger that fills you up and tastes...
