First off, I want to make it known that I attempt to be fair with my reviews so I will focus on the positives. Though I ordered the ginger slaw, they brought jalapeno but it was fantastic! It was a nice balance to the chipotle cheesesteak. I enjoyed that meal and though I felt like the fried onions were unnecessary, it was a solid sandwich and the right price. Good heat and flavor balance. We got the pretzel and would say that it had a good flavor but was too soft for my liking. Beer cheese sauce was tasty though. But now, what I'd consider mistakes. The beer list was outdated and it took multiple attempts at ordering something available. There was no new list. The variety was there but they had no west coast IPAs or amber ales. Ordered a Yuengling - the only decent domestic - and was informed that had tapped out. My guess is because everyone orders that for 2 reasons: it's the right price and it assuages people who wanted amber ales. Again, in light of being fair, I do appreciate their list but it just didn't have much for me. I don't like to pay to drink out but when I know I am, I want to order just one. But at these prices, I don't even think that was reasonable. I was overcharged for my 5 ounce pour by 50 cents, according to the menu. But I didn't want to haggle about it. The full size pour - which is still just a 10 ounce - of the Ghost in the Machine was 9 bucks, which was way too much. And since the menu was not updated, I didn't know it was that expensive. I obviously have not run a restaurant but I have purchased full sized kegs and I homebrew so I feel like I understand the value in the product. Which is why I don't understand why places charge 2, 3, even 4 dollars more than is reasonable for beer. It's gotten out of hand everywhere, if we're being honest. Our waiter was very kind and prompt, though it did take a bit to see him to start, which was surprising because when we arrived there was maybe 4 full tables. I didn't notice a problem with it being loud, as others have said, but perhaps part of the problem is large tables and therefore, distance between people. It was a decent lunch but I don't think the kinks are ironed...
Read moreSmitty's is fantastic...great new, local place in Tallahassee.
The service and the food were excellent...full bar with a very nice choice of beers on tap, many from our local breweries. The atmosphere is fun and inviting with a great bar and a nice outdoor area. The bar has a garage-type door for when it cools off a bit, will really open it up for a great space. Some beer garden-type seating in the dining room gives it that festive feel. A great place to meet with friends, family...to unwind, watch a game, whatever...a very comfortable atmosphere. See the reviews about the noise, we didn't experience that, seemed fine, so maybe those sound deafening pads they installed have helped.
We had the Chips and Spicy Dip to start, very tasty. The chips were homemade, crispy and not greasy at all. They complimented the spicy, cherry pepper dip very well...the spice was just right. Wife had the Tuna Pocket, YUM...made with hummus instead of mayonnaise, awesome. I had the Munch Roasted Chicken with the roasted potatoes, A MUST! Inspired, I hear, from a trip to Oktoberfest in Munich, a very authentic taste. It came with a side salad and I tried the Honey Lime dressing...different and quite good.
Smitty's is fun, in a great spot, with an awesome menu. You can tell the owner and staff really put a lot of thought into everything, and care that their guests have a pleasant experience. Cheers Smitty's, here's to a long and...
Read moreMy wife and I were staying overnight in Tallahassee on our way to Hilton Head when we decided to get a bite to eat before turning in for the night. After a quick search online, my wife found Smittyâs Taphouse & Grill and was intrigued by the menu. We showed up around 7pm and though Smittyâs was busy, we were seated promptly. We started with drinks and the Cuban Egg Rolls. The egg rolls arrived in timely fashion and were hot and crispy. Unfortunately, the pulled pork inside had not a hint of seasoning and the egg rolls though crispy were oily as though they were not allowed to drain. I would advise that they place them on something absorbent when plating. Something as simple as a slice of bread would suffice. For our meals I ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich and my wife ordered the Five Cheese Grilled Cheese. The prime rib was not tender or pink at all. Either it was poor quality or had been sliced and sitting all day and then grilled before made into sandwiches which would have led to over cooking. The Grilled cheese was okay but nothing more special than you could make in your own kitchen. At the end of the day our visit wasnât horrible but after reading the descriptions of the food, we were looking forward to what Smittyâs had to offer. Unfortunately, it seems Smittyâs true strengths lie in marketing and not food prep.
OBTW, this place IS loud, not was as stated in response to a...
