I stopped here with my brother in law on a Sunday for lunch. As you approach from the parking lot you can smell the smoke ... When you walk in you are at the smoker area, and their staff helps you to get the meats that you desire. We had a chopped beef sandwich and a brisket sandwich. Then you have the staff provide you with their sides....I had the coleslaw and he had the tater tot casserole. I ordered the Key Lime Pie.They also have all the fixin's: onions, pickles, white bread, beans, sauce Etc... help yourself to all the beans that you want! I enjoyed the smoky and very tender meats, my coleslaw was good, and the key lime pie was exceptional! My brother-in-law enjoyed his chopped beef sandwich and tater tot casserole, too. Total for 2 sandwiches, two sides, a soft drink and a piece of pie was $33.49 before tip, a fair value. The restaurant is clean and well organized, on weekends he has some low-key entertainment, and it's a very Hill Country crowd. Overall I really enjoyed this and would strongly recommend Opies for some good barbecue. ... recently stopped in and got the pork ribs, cole slaw, tater tots casserole, Mac and cheese and a large chopped beef sandwich. All delicious. See pics.

Passed by Opies BBQ after spending a few hours at Krause Springs and opening up quite the appetite. You immediately get into a line to make your meat selections where they cut, plate, weigh and wrap everything up for you. We got a half rack of baby back ribs, jalapeño cheese sausage, pork loin, and the highly recommended tater tot casserole. The ribs were tender & tasty, the sausage flavorful, the pork loin was good but a bit dry, and the tater tot casserole was the absolute highlight of our meal. It is 100% worth all the rave. I will purposely drive out of my way to come back for an extra large serving of that delicious casserole. They have a self-service station where you can help yourself to bread, beans, pickles, jalapeños, sauces, etc. The beans were quite tasty! We didn't try any desserts on this visit but certainly will whenever we come back. The restaurant is a bit pricey but we left satisfied and it was the perfect meal to balance out our day in the sun at the springs. The atmosphere here is very laid back and relaxed - Definitely has that cute small town vibe. Overall, Opies is definitely worth a visit especially for the casserole!

It’s hard to stand out in the bbq world when you’re in epicenter of all great bbq; opie’s is a strong contender because it’s so well rounded (just as well rounded as I will be if I could eat there as often as I would like). The meats are well smoked and fall off the bone tender. We got a chopped brisket sandwich, a pork sandwich, 1/2 rack of baby back ribs and a smoke jalapeño and cheese sausage. Everything was moist and delicious. There are sides galore! This is where opie’s shine since they do both the bbq AND the sides amazingly well. I *almost* ordered all the sides. There’s also free buttered beans, onions, pickles, pickled jalapeños and of course bread! For those of you who still have room, they have at least four different dessert options. I don’t have a sweet tooth, so I did not order any. There’s plenty of seating. I saw this family picnicking outside on the grass which is a super cute idea! The staff are quick and friendly. I’ll be back if I need a bbq fix

My wife and her friend were going on a bachelorette trip which meant I was on my own for the weekend. Yes! This would be a good opportunity for me to hit up a few BBQ joints over the weekend. I had a list of places that I could visit for the first time. The first stop for the weekend was Opie's Barbecue. I have tried their meats at a few barbecue festivals, and my reactions have always been positive. They are located west of Austin in Spicewood which is about 30 miles away. They are also on the Texas Monthly's Top 50 list. Good enough for me to visit.

The first thing you see when you walk through the front door is a huge meat case. All the smoked meats are presented in front of you. I went with moist brisket, pork spareribs, baby back ribs, and regular sausage. The brisket was like butter. It melted in your mouth. It was tender and smoky. They used an electric knife to cut it, but a butter knife would have been the better utensil to use. It had a great bark that came from mesquite wood and was one of the better briskets I have had. I was not expecting to eat a brisket of that quality. The sausage was heavy on pepper and had a good snap. Their house blend was tasty, but the grit was on the fine side. The pork spareribs were solid. They were tender and juicy with a good amount of smoke. The baby back ribs were the winner here. They had a sweet saucy glaze and were delicious. I could have eaten a whole rack if I did not have another stop to go. You have to order by half rack, but you have to get it. Opie's even gives you free pinto beans as a side. They were good but nothing special.

Opie's Barbecue is really not that far from Austin and worth the visit. The anticipation grows during the drive, but once you take your first bite, you knew you made the right choice. Everything was good if not great. I will try the pork chop, pulled pork, and jalapeño sausage when I am there again. On the way out, I heard someone complaining about there being a line. There were about eight people in...
