We had a delightful dinner at PoPo Restaurant. We met there around 4:45 pm for dinner. My friend had been thinking about the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, & green beans. But, when we were seated, the waitress said they were cooking up a bunch of their Dr. Pepper Glazed Ribs, and my friend got very excited to hear they were on the menu for dinner. Along with the half-order of ribs, we got the Crackling Corn and the Fried Mac & Cheese. As usual, she & I split the meal, and the waitress was on-point bringing an extra plate.
As I mentioned, we got there early, and the waitress made sure we knew they were still on the pit & would be a little longer than if we ordered something else. No worries, we had lots to discuss, and we were served some of their Freshly made cornbread with honey and butter. We talked and talked. The waitress stopped by several times to make sure we still had water and to update us on the timing for the ribs. I don't know how long it took till the ribs were ready, but we were enjoying our conversation.
When dinner was served, I sliced up the ribs and we proceeded to get finger-licking messy. They were delicious. I have had "fall-off-the-bone" ribs which are usually overcooked and dry except for the sauce. These were cooked perfectly - juicy to the bite and just enough tug from the bone to prevent drying out.
The Crackling Corn is a casserole type dish with cream cheese & chives. The flavor was delicious, reminiscent of Rudy's (bbq) creamed Corn but not nearly as overcooked.
The Fried Mac & Cheese was amazing. It had a wonderfully crispy crust and a baked Mac & Cheese interior that had me thinking they freeze brick if it to drop in the fryer.
This was last night and my friend took the leftover ribs home with her, and she said they were even better tonight.
The service was excellent, exactly what you'd expect from a small town restaurant. We will definitely be returning to this gem of...
Read moreHad lunch here, NOT impressed! Ot was our FIRST time eating here, and our LAST. Staff were very nice, but service was very slow. It was not very busy either, there was only 6 or 7 tables including us and at least 3 servers that we saw, so there was no reason for things to take so long. Meals took a long time to come out too, about 35 minutes, so we fully expected the food to be fresh and good and it was NOT! The food was terrible. I got the fried shrimp, I bet they came out of a frozen package from Sysco or somewhere, it cost $12 and they were over cooked (3 of them were almost burnt....I could have got the same thing at Boat-n-Net for $4!!! Kids meals are WAAAAAAAAAY over priced, $8 for a grilled cheese with fries, really????? That should be $4. I made my son get a burger and fries for $1 more. My sons hamburger was ordered medium well, it came out still raw in the middle.....clearly their cook doesn't know the difference between medium well and medium rare! My dad's order was the same way, though he said it tasted good, he got chopped steak, but it was supposed to be baon wrapped and there was NO bacon what so ever on it. He also ordered french fries and was served half burnt steak fries. The waitress did have my sons' burgers remade and they came out well done instead of medium well. We waited 5 minutes just for a to-go box! Sorry PoPo's, but your food is too over priced for the quality. We won't be back! We could have got the same thing at Denny's for a lot less and it would have tasted better, lol! I will say that the complimentary biscuits were REALLY good! It's ashame that the free food was better than the...
Read moreOur son and daughter-in-law came to town for the weekend and we decided to eat at PoPo's since we hadn't been in a while. BOY, WAS THAT A MISTAKE! Prices went sky high and portions down. Since my husband are seniors (no senior menu at all) we opted for the not so hungry thinking we could have meat, baked potato and salad but just smaller portions. Were we wrong! The side (1 only) was $1.99 extra and if you wanted a salad etc. you paid full price for that side. RIPOFF! Daughter-in-law had the special (beef tips) - they were overcooked. Son had chicken fried steak - more batter than meat. My husband had the not so hungry catfish strips. They brought him chicken strips and said they were cooked in error but would bring the catfish strips when they were done and he wouldn't be charged extra. Certainly hope not since it was restaurant error. And don't expect to get cheese free for the baked potato - $.99 extra. And no biscuits. Half was through the meal we asked about the biscuits and the waiter said you had to ask for them - cutting down on waste. The waiter tried to make jokes about the different problems and pricing but he wasn't funny at all. Waiter cleared our plates but it was another 10 minutes before he brought the check. Bad experience all the way around. Won't go back. And by the way - Sea Island in San Antonio and Bourbon Street Cafe in Leon Springs put out food just as good if not better and half the price of...
