I was looking for some local fare while on a work trip to the area. I settled on Ping's for a chance of a great view on a beautiful spring evening. The view did not disappoint. The food, on the other hand, was a let down. I was craving some pub style food, so I went with the always healthy fried pickle chips and boneless wings. The pickles came out first, and were ok. There was not too much flavor in the breading, and the pickles themselves did not have much of a dill snap to them. I was hoping for better on the boneless wings. I ordered them in a few different flavors to get a good variety. When they came out, you could tell just by the shape it was frozen out of a bag. It actually looked just like a bigger chicken nugget. I have had some really good frozen, pre-made wings before, so I just chuckled at the shape. The first one I bit into almost made me stop there. I honestly have no idea what flavor the sauce was supposed to be. The BBQ? The Bourbon? Maybe the Mango Habenero? There was not much sauce on any of the wings, and what was there was kind of flat and didn't hold much flavor. The boneless wing itself was the worst I had ever eaten. The meat was not the whole chunk of white meat chicken I expected. It had the consistency of chipboard, and probably not much more flavor (I don't eat chipboard, so I am assuming a lot here). It did not hold it's shape in your mouth and it just fell apart. It was disgusting. I thought it might be a fluke, so I tried another "flavor". This one was a bourbon one, but I could only tell that because it smelled a little like bourbon. Again, no taste from the sauce or the "chicken". I tried one more just to see if it was the mango habenero. Who knows. After 3 wings out of a full dozen, I was done. The best part of the meal was the celery that came with the boneless wings. When the waitress came out, I told her that she could take the rest of them back, and she did not even ask how I liked them. They had a large table inside, so I am sure their focus was on them. I paid my bill in full and left. On the way back to the hotel I stopped in at a chain fast food place for some ice cream, and I know I could have spent 1/2 of what I did and gotten better boneless wings there. shrug I have seen a big advertisement for their wing night on Wednesdays. They seem to get a lot of traffic from that (from overhearing the cook talking to some other customers), so maybe their traditional wings are better. Either way, I will be hard pressed to recommend them to co-workers if they are even...
Read moreHave eaten there several times recently. Everything was great, but what sets this restaurant apart is the view. Inside dining is great. The place is actually one of two remaining buildings from Camp Toccoa, a World War II paratrooper training facility (and filming location for the TV series "Band of Brothers"), moved to Lake Toccoa sometime after the military facility was dismantled. Much of this original Officers' Club building has been preserved, including the heart pine flooring and paneling. (Interesting to see 2x4s that are actually 2" by 4"). Outside, we sat beside the lake in gorgeous weather under a crystal blue sky. When we first sat down, the sun was very bright, but about halfway through our meal, the sun dipped behind the beautiful fall foliage across the lake, and we got to watch a long and beautiful sunset. It was all picture-postcard. I have to add that Ping's is never very crowded, and I can't help but wonder if it has something to do with the name of the place. I had seen the sign from the main road many times, and I (and probably many others) failed to make the golf connection. The restaurant sits right beside The Links at Toccoa, a nice 9-hole course, so "Ping's" is of course a reference to the famous putter branded with that name. But for all the hundreds of times I passed by, my immediate and lasting impression was that it is a Chinese restaurant (please don't me wrong idea, I love Chinese food and people). I just wonder how many other potential diners pass it by because they're more in the mood for a great burger? Oh and speaking of great burgers...yeah! And when I finally managed to pass on the admittedly unhealthy (and excellent) side of fries, I got the pepper slaw. Oh my,...
