When I visit any restaurant, I'm pretty easy to please. Good food, decent portions, adequate service, decent atmosphere and value will get me back. Even 4 out of 5 and I'm likely to return. Understandably many factors which include time of year, location and economy may affect some of these. This is what I found. This was probably my 5th or 6th time at this restaurant and likely my last. I'm not going to lie. The place is beautiful. If you are looking for ambiance and only ambiance, by all means take a chance. However, if you are edging on value and service, you may want to look elsewhere. The food is good, but not great. Simple things like filling a bun with the same sized burger means something. Portions have been scaled back from past visits. This is obvious in every aspect of the menu. Entree's are extremely overpriced. I need to remind everyone that this is located in Altmar, NY. and not NYC or San Francisco. In addition to the inflated dinner prices, none that we ordered came with salads or soup. Those were extra. Basically you feel like you are being nickled and dimed for everything. On this particular night it was midweek, late evening and 4 waitresses that I counted. Maybe 6 tables total. It took 90 minutes to receive our meals. On a busy night I can accept this. There simply was no excuse. As quiet as it was, there was a table quite a distance from us that were incredibly loud and we honestly could not hear each other speak over them. This is where management typically steps ins and says something to try and maintain a pleasant atmosphere for the rest of the patrons. This was not done. I give Tailwater 2 stars. Honestly it could easily have been 1 star. The overall beauty of the dining area gives it the extra star. If your are looking to see some great decorating and fine workmanship, this might suit you well. Just be prepared with your wallet, your patience and a plan B when you find yourself unfulfilled at the end of...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed at the tail water lodge for our 10-year anniversary. I called The tail water restaurant the day before and let them know that we were staying there for our anniversary and asked if I could set up a dinner reservation. The girl who helped me over the phone was very friendly and accommodating. When we showed up the next day for our reservation the hostess immediately knew who I was and said she took my reservation the day before and remembered me. Again, she was extremely friendly and accommodating. She immediately sat us. Our waitress was also very friendly and accommodating. She was very quick with getting us our drinks from the bar. My wife and I were both very satisfied with our mixed drinks. We ordered a personal flat bread pizza for an appetizer for my wife and I to share. It was really good! My wife ordered the veggie burger with the garlic fries and I ordered the Reuben with the garlic fries. My wife said the veggie burger was one of the best that she has had. We both agreed that the garlic fries were amazing! Unfortunately, my Reuben was very tough and I am not a complainer so I just ate almost half of it and when the waitress asked if I wanted a box I told her no thank you. She asked me if everything was all right. I told her that Reuben was a bit tough. She apologized and asked if she could get me something else. I declined as I didn't want to order a whole new meal. She also said because it was our anniversary that they were treating us to a desert. We ordered some kind of apple crisp with ice cream and it was awesome! When the waitress came back and brought us our bill she let us know that she had removed the Reuben and did not charge us for the dessert and apologized again. Even though my Reuben was not very good they did everything right to correct the situation and I still believe they absolutely deserve the five star rating as everything else...
Read moreWe're staying at the lodge and tried to order food from the restaurant. We were told there were no reservations available for the entire day, no worries we'll just order and eat it in our room. I call later to order and nobody answers so we have to walk down and order in person. I order and they say they'll call my room when it's ready. An hour and a half later with no call I go down to the restaurant and ask about my food... THEY NEVER EVEN STARTED IT.
I now have two kids starving in my room and their only response was "Oh yeah, sorry, we'll put that in now". I didn't need to re-state the order because they had the order, they just never started it.
For context some folks who ordered at the same time as me had their order ready and never received a call, they had to just go and check to figure out their food had been ready and sitting there for a while.
It's been almost 2 hrs and I have yet to receive my food.
:Update: After waiting at the front station (in the photo) for 45 minutes they gave me my order and I paid. Halfway back to my room I noticed ITS NOT MY ORDER. I just paid for someone else's order and after going back and talking to what seems to be the manager they STILL haven't started my order... this is insane.
:Update 2: Right when I got back to my room they called me to say they "found" my order. I'm now eating a luke warm, FULL PRICE burger. That's right, 3+ hours of nonsense and they still charged me full price, no offer of a drink while I stood there and waited, no attempt to so customer service at all. This restaurant is a joke at the expense of the people staying here. If I could give it 0 stars I absolutely would, worse customer service...
