I just recently discovered Sal's Birdland, the Airpark location. I have lived in Rochester since 2010 and drive by this place while traveling on Scottsville Road five to eight times a week. I kept telling myself I needed to check it out but just kept putting it off.
A couple weeks ago I was craving fried chicken and not the corporate stuff, I mean real fried chicken. You see to me fried chicken is my go to comfort food however, corporate fried chicken never hit the spot! When I was growing up my family had a catering business for weddings, parties and such. My grandmother's fried chicken was the best, especially the next day, and I have not been able to find any that could compete with it. So I decided to check out Sal's. I am so thankful I did! I am just sorry it took almost eight years to do it. I have finally found real fried chicken in Rochester...I have finally found my true comfort food again!
I ordered the half fried chicken with mac salad, baked beans and their hot sauce, it also came with two slices of bread. The chicken, while not exactly like my grandmother's was so close it brought me back to my youth. The skin was so crispy and flavorful. The meat so juicy the juice was running down my fingers. This may sound strange but I have to say that the chicken actually tasted like chicken. I don't know what it is about chicken today but it doesn't taste like it use to. Not this glorious bird, it was the best tasting chicken I have had in decades.
As to the mac salad, most of them I get around here are lackluster at best and I was expecting he same here. Oh no not this mac salad, it was so flavorful I couldn't believe it. May my grandma forgive me for saying thus but, it is better than hers. The balance of flavors in the salad have to be from years trying to get it just right. You can tell that they take care to keep the recipe alive and true. I saw that they sell a mac salad kit, I am going to order this in the future and take to my in-laws for Memorial Day.
The beans were fantastic as well, I love Bush's Baked Beans especially cold, so not much to say about them.
I also ordered a side order of chicken gizzards. I know we all remember from our youth grandma boiling the chicken giblets to make gravey. The she would mince them up and put them in the gravey, well all but that tough as rubber gizzards. These aren't your grandma's gizzards. These gizzards were so melt in your mouth tender I couldn't believe what I was eating. It was like eating pillows of deliciousness. Then dipping them in that Sassy Sauce took it to a whole other level of mind blowing awesomeness.
Now let's talk about THAT SAUCE, that Sal's Sassy Sauce. Oh let the gods be praised for this stuff. I thought I was going to get the same typical hot sauce that everyone serves, oh how wrong I was! I just want to know what had to be sold, sacrificed or paid to develop this sauce. It is the perfect combination of heat and sweet that I have ever had. At first you will get a nice sweet taste on your tounge followed by the perfect amount of heat. It is not the fire breathing dragon heat, it is just the right amount to wake up your taste buds. The sauce compliments the chicken so well it is unbelievable. It helps to being out flavors I never thought existed in chicken. I think you could literally put this sauce on about anything and it would taste better.
Overall, I would advise you to get yourself over to Sal's Birdland NOW, either location, and get yourself some great food. The guys at the Airpark location are great. Very nice and there to make your food experience that much better with their impressive food. Everything I have ordered has be wonderful. Sal's is my new comfort food go to place.

What’s good everybody—welcome back to Boss Fights and Bites, where we take on the toughest bosses and the boldest bites. Today, I pulled up to a Rochester classic—Sal’s Birdland—famous for their legendary signature sauce. I grabbed the 6-piece chicken wings, and here’s how they stack up on the Boss Fights and Bites scale.
🔥 Flavor = Power-Ups The flavor is where Sal’s goes full cheat code. The first bite gave me that crispy crunch, and then the signature sauce hit like grabbing a star in Mario—sweet, tangy, spicy, all layered together. It’s bold, it’s unique, and it straight-up makes the wings shine. For flavor, I’m giving this 9/10 Power-Ups.
👌 Portion Size = Extra Lives Here’s where it gets tricky. Six wings? That’s like starting a boss fight with only one extra life—you know you’re gonna need more to finish the game. The wings were great, but the portion left me still hungry. For portion size, I gotta call it 6/10 Extra Lives.
🥊 Texture / Cook Quality = Boss Hits Crispy outside, juicy inside—that’s how wings are supposed to be. Every bite felt like landing a clean combo on the boss. No soggy wings, no dry meat—just cooked right. For quality, that’s 9/10 Boss Hits.
🌍 Overall Experience = Levels Cleared The vibe at Sal’s is pure Rochester culture. The wings, the sauce, the tradition—it feels like something every local knows and every visitor has to try. It’s messy, it’s bold, and it’s got history behind it. I’m calling it 4 out of 5 Levels Cleared.
⚡ Final Score = Boss Fights and Bites Power Meter Put it all together, and I’m giving Sal’s Birdland wings a solid 8.5 out of 10 on the Boss Fights and Bites Power Meter. Legendary flavor, crispy wings, unforgettable sauce—the only thing holding it back is that portion size.
And that’s the review right here on Boss Fights and Bites—where we mix the games with the eats. If you want wings that hit like a boss battle and a sauce that feels like a power-up, load into Sal’s Birdland and see if you can clear the level. Until next time—keep grinding, keep gaming, and keep eating like...
Read moreA few days ago I was in the area of Sal's Birdland on Scottsville Road. I haven't been there in years. I decided to stop in and order a meal.
First off, all the tables have been removed. Booths surround the walls of the restaurant. The floor is absolutely spotless. I was impressed at how clean the floor was.
I met a very nice and helpful woman named Terri. She helped me make my menu choices. I decided to sit at a booth and wait for my meal. I had the 8 piece wing dinner, with chicken legs included. I was offered 2 side dishes. I went with the macaroni salad and the potato wedges. I had on the side blue cheese dressing and the mild sauce.
Everything was delicious. The chicken wings and chicken legs were perfectly fried. There was lots of meat on the wings and chicken legs. The macaroni salad was Delicious! ( In fact, I went back there two days later and ordered to go a large serving of macaroni salad ) The salad had just the right amount of mayonnaise and other delicious ingredients. It was like eating peanuts, I could probably have sat there all day and consumed the macaroni salad. The potato wedges were delicious. Evenly fried. To dip them in the mild sauce and blue cheese dressing was an extra treat.
There was heat in the restaurant and I was not cold.
They filter and change their frying oil on a regular basis.
I ate there during the rush hour. The phone was busy. Terri handled each call with courtesy and professionalism. I never saw impatience or rudeness come from her.
Customers started to come in from all age groups and backgrounds. They were polite and some waited quietly for their meals to go.
Kudos to Sal's Birdland restaurant. Just look for the big yellow sign on the side of the road once you get off the expressway and onto Scottsville Road.
Thank you for a delicious meal. I...
