My husband and I have a summer cottage over in Greenfield Park, which is about a 6-minute drive from Mountain Dale. We had gone to Basbousa when it was open in the mornings--fantastic coffee, but so-so breakfast/brunch items. However, Basbousa has now renovated and changed up its menu and dining times to be a dinner-only establishment. The restaurant touts its "Southern/Middle Eastern" fusion style and we decided to give it a try. The atmosphere is cozy, hip and romantic, and the two-girl music group that happened to be playing tonight gave it a soothing, relaxing vibe. There were many dishes on the menu we were not familiar with, but both of us are always willing to try new foods and boy, are we happy we did. He got the Honey Salmon, a seared piece of fresh fish drizzled with spice-laced honey and seasonings which came with toasted coconut rice and a tahini salad. He absolutely loved it. I got the Moroccan Fried Chicken, which also came with toasted coconut rice and a pickled cucumber salad. It pays to point out here that the Moroccan chicken, although fried, is gluten free with only a very light layer of crispy batter on it. The crunch was perfect and the chicken was so juicy and tender, it nearly melted in my mouth. As much as he loved his salmon, my husband kept stealing pieces of my chicken (well, okay...I gave him some, because I felt bad watching him drool over my reaction to how amazing this chicken actually was). When I eat out, especially with today's pricing, there is nothing more satisfying to me than placing something in my mouth that instantly makes me hum with delight. Everything on my plate was outstanding. Needless to say, both of us belonged to the "clean plate club" by the time we were done eating--we nearly licked the plate, the food was so delicious. The only negative was that the service was a little slow and it took quite some time for our food to get to us--thankfully, we're not the cranky, impatient type and we just enjoyed a glass of wine and an IPA while we waited. I would advise to be patient--the servers are super sweet, but since the restaurant is not small and was packed, two servers may not have been enough. Don't let this deter you. Go to Basbousa and get the Moroccan Chicken ASAP. It is absolutely...
Read moreThe Hudson Valley is full of hidden gems, and we recently discovered one: Basbousa. Created by an entrepreneurial couple who also run the well-loved Bashakill Winery just a few miles away, Basbousa is their latest addition—and it’s a must-visit.
The food is a creative and thoughtful blend of cuisines that feels both unique and deeply satisfying. You can taste the care in every bite—even the pita bread is warm, fresh, and memorable. The hummus varieties served alongside it are so flavorful you’ll find yourself scraping the plate for every last bit. I embarrassingly asked for a spoon to scoop up the last traces of hummus on my clean plate, and the founder—who happened to be walking by—not only happily obliged but added, “You can use your fingers!” as she rushed off to get me the spoon. Talk about warm, genuine hospitality.
What’s most admirable about this couple is their continued drive to shape memorable experiences in the region. With Basbousa, they’ve created something that feels fresh, intimate, and full of character. It has already been called “the sexiest restaurant in the Catskills,” and it’s easy to see why.
For those of us lucky enough to stumble upon it, it feels like a responsibility to spread the word. It would feel selfish to keep a place like this to ourselves—Basbousa deserves to be discovered, shared,...
Read moreThis is a relatively new dining option in the small village of Mountaindale. Lunch is served until 3 PM -- we arrived shortly after 2 PM. There are a handful of outdoor tables on the wooden porch. The interior has been redone from a previous establishment and offers a comfortable and tasteful atmosphere. On our visit, the restaurant was busy. After our arrival, a group of six appeared for mimosas at a large table that accommodates perhaps a dozen or so patrons. This is not fast food, and it is worth the wait. One of our orders was the delicious Lunch In Beirut. This is a sampler platter. The house made falafel is darker than other falafels but was the tastiest version of this item I have experienced. The menu describes the rest of this order: grilled halloumi cheese, pink hummus, an olive salad, a diced tomato and greens salad, and a warm grilled pita sliced into convenient portions. This dish is a winner! Our other choice was the Honey Chicken Wrap -- likewise delicious! Judging by the number of other diners, Basbousa is quickly developing a hearty following with an exotic and fabulous menu unique to itself! This is a winning choice that is simply not found elsewhere. We warmly welcome Basbousa to the dining scene of Ulster and Sullivan...
