I really struggled on deciding whether or not to write this review, but here it goes.
Southern BBQ Law.... if you stroll into a BBQ joint and they offer a plethora of free sauces..... it only means one thing. They know their food just ain't hittin.
Let me preface this review by stating I'm a born n bred southerner. Due to that I have come into contact with the best BBQ known to man... Shout out to Scott's BBQ in Hemingway, SC!
I have visited KRBs 3 times now. Each time making sure to try a different meat and different sides. I did not try the ribs given my coworker got them and you could clang your silverware off the meat it was that dry, so no ty lol. While I have not tried all the sides, I did try all the familiar southern staples.
Let's start with the sides....
Every side I tried was terrible. From the collards to the red taters and everything in-between. The collards tasted like they were dumped out of a can and heated up, the red taters were soaking in water (who does that!), every red blooded southerner knows you bake or grill red taters, you don't soak them in water. The cornbread actually ticked me off, whole corn kernels in the cornbread. The last vusit I made I refused sides for all the reasons above. I made a pot of collards for Thanksgiving, and I debated on whether or not to take them a plate so they can try real southern food and learn lol.
Onto the meats....
The Pulled Pork I have to give a 3/10. The reason for the low rating is due to the flavor. Their pulled pork only tasted like grease and liquid smoke. Now, I am not suggesting they used liquid smoke. I'm only stating that's what it tastes like.
The Brisket I have to give a 2/10 simply for how dry it was. The flavor was bland and being dry on top of it..... that's a no go. I am aware Brisket is not an easy meat to master and hopefully they can get it dialed in.
The Chicken..... The chicken was firing on all cylinders, so I gotta give em a 9/10. Granted, I know their chicken is baked, which is a cardinal sin for a BBQ joint, but the flavor was just too good!
Let's talk about Service and Atmosphere. The service and atmosphere I have to give a 10/10. The joint was clean and the staff friendly, and I can't ask for more than that.
Summary - I can honestly say if you served a plate of this food (minus the chicken) to anyone from my neck of the woods..... you aren't leaving without a broken jaw. BBQ is no joke in the deep south and this.... this is not BBQ. This tasted like it was made by mayonnaise Yankees for mayonnaise Yankees (which technically it is) by lacking spice, flavor, depth, and the general know how on how to prep each dish. I have to say though.... if KRBs only served chicken, they'd get 5 stars no questions asked. However they tried to recreate what I have known all my life and they failed. If this is the bar that is set for BBQ up here then I need to open my own shack and clean house.... especially at those prices for what you get... or better yet what you don't get.... FLAVOR!
P.S. You can get better BBQ in southern gas stations for half the price.
P.S.S. I can appreciate the attempt at Carolina Red Sauce and frankly it was the only way I got the pork down. Having said that it had no spice which is another...
Read moreNever again!! The food at this place shouldn't be served at all. Texas Twinkie was dried out and could tell had been sitting around for some time. The coleslaw was rotten. They apparently make it with sour cream, which had gone bad. Just plain nasty! Mac'N'Cheese is definitely something that comes from Sysco, my son's school serves better. Again another item that was dried out and bland. The applesauce and baked beans were ok, seemed that they were made from scratch. That is why I gave a one star for food. The ribs were over done and dried out. The brisket was bland as could be and fatty and greasy. It left a film on my teeth and made me brush my teeth as soon as I got home a long with having an upset stomach. The burnt ends were not burnt ends. It was chunks of fat doused in barbeque sauce, probably to cover up the fact that they aren't serving burnt ends. The pulled pork was bland and fatty and had to be covered in barbeque sauce to be eaten. The drinks were about the best thing that we got. I over heard another customer telling the other person she was with that she couldn't eat anymore because the food was giving her an upset stomach. When we got home everyone had to use the bathroom immediately. Nothing like paying almost $100 for food and it running right through. Will never recommend or go back. If people think this food is good they apparently are not foodies and have not had enough experience with good food to know what is. Not worth the price that we paid! Tables are crammed together inside and it needed to be cleaned, napkins and bones on the floor. The young high schoolers that serve the food, well their high schoolers, how good do you think the service is? No different than McDonald's. Don't waste your money or time!!!! The menu ordering has restrictions. You can't get anything ala carte. So if you aren't a big eater you are gonna be wasting your money on food that you don't want to get or will eat. If you want better beef go to Arby's. They have...
Read moreKRB opened early last summer. This is a smaller tourist community, so when I seen we were getting a BBQ place I was amped! After looking at the “coming soon” sign and waiting over a year to eat there I was not disappointed. Their food is really quite good (maybe a bit expensive). Our family really wanted to support a great local restaurant so we ate there almost every weekend last summer. I did the math, our family of 3 spent over $1,000 on BBQ last summer. We got some decent food and happily supported a new local business.
Then to our dismay they closed at the end of tourist season?! We (the locals) spent every weekend fighting through crowds of travelers and giving over hundreds of hard earned dollars, all the while dreaming of the “off” season when we could get a meal without all the commotion of vacationing families.
Most locals loved that place and would have more than kept it going over winter. Even in the summer they were only open Thurs-Sun, prime vacation days around here, then winter comes and the locals get forgotten about. Even if they would’ve reduced hours to one or two days a week for us it would have been awesome. I don’t see how I can support this place anymore, and many others who live here year round feel the same. If you don’t respect the locals we can’t respect you. I’m very disappointed, 2 stars is the best I can do for this place and we will likely won’t visit much anymore. If you do visit watch out for the cornbread, it’s...
