If 6 stars was an option, they would get it!!!! We came from out of town and all the reviews I read said to come early so e plan to get there at about 5:15, end up taking a wrong turn or set us back about 7 minutes and then we're only four minutes away we got stopped by the longest and slowest train I've ever seen which set us back another 13 minutes. As we sat there I was thinking maybe we should just turn around as we had someplace to be after dinner- boy am I glad we didn't do that! The parking lot was pretty full, but we drove around and found a spot, the only negative was when we walked in we weren't really sure what to do to get a table (no host stand that I noticed or sign directing us). I went to the bathroom and then walked up to the bar (one of two full size bars) and grabbed a couple seats there once another couple left for their table. Again we were in a rush so we ended up just eating at the bar. Ordered some old fashioned's from a very friendly and busy bartender (Hailey I think)-drinks were hand muddled and delicious! She took our order right away and got us another round of drinks. Staff worked very well together as they were very busy on a Friday night and really had a customer first approach. They checked in often- my wife and I split a seafood combo and fish combo which included fried haddock, fried shrimp, fried bluegill, fried perch, choice of side, rye bread, coleslaw and homemade delicious tartar sauce (as a chef the tartar was some of the best I've ever had). The fish was cooked perfectly, well seasoned and generous portions. I cannot get over how great our bartender did- with how busy it was and how often she checked in and remained calm under pressure (saw a few spills, accidents and drops in her bar area and she kept on rocking it through it all) it was a great customer service experience for us. The ambiance was cool for a bar and grill, we absolutely cannot wait to get back here for another...
Read moreHave always had a great experience at Schmittys. That is, until today when I took my mother and grandmother there for lunch. My mom ordered something that the menu specified was "gluten friendly". When the food was brought out, the waitress held the plate out and said something that didn't sound like what was ordered, and it had bread all over it, therefore not gluten friendly. When my mom said that she didn't think that's what she ordered, the waitress stomped away with an annoyed look on her face. Then a different waitress and what looked to be a manager came to the table with the same food without the bread. She then very rudely lectured my mom for 10 minutes about how she needs to tell them about her gluten allergy, because how would they know. This was all a simple misunderstanding (caused by their misleading menu) that did NOT need to be a big deal, but after she was talked down to, humiliated and repeatedly interrupted by this woman in front of a restaurant full of people for 10 minutes, she had lost her appetite and just wanted to leave. But we finished our food quickly and left, not wanting to cause more of a scene. If it is that big of a deal to you for customers with a gluten allergy to say something about it, then maybe instead of saying something is "gluten friendly" on the menu, put "Please tell us if you are sensitive to gluten". Since she thought that what she ordered was gluten free, she didn't think she needed to say something. And then she was made to feel stupid by this incredibly rude woman, because their menu is misleading. The mistake is perfectly ok. Mistakes happen, misunderstandings happen, but the way the first waitress and then this manager handled the situation was humiliating for my mom. Will not be returning, and honestly can't even believe that this was allowed to happen at...
Read morePopped in spontaneously after a search on Google for highly rated lunch restaurants. Boy, were we disappointed. First off, the good stuff. Excellent cottage-on-the-lake type atmosphere, and the place is enormous. Extensive beer offering (note that no prices are listed on that menu, and that the vast majority are only offered in cans, not on tap) and huge food menu, so it took us longer than normal to decide. We ordered a fried pickle appetizer, which was decent but the breading could have used more flavor/spices. The first beers my husband and I asked for were both out of stock, so we moved on to others. Mine was awful (tasted like cough medicine)...and ended up costing $11!?!?!? My husband ordered one of their burritos and I got the Irish Car Bomb burger; both came with waffle fries and both plates were delivered at the same time. While his fries were fine (crispy and delicious), mine were clearly old, rubbery and soggy. Both our main dishes were DROWNING in sauce, so much so you could barely see or taste the meat. Seemed like they were trying to cover up bad cuts or poor quality meats. Also, the whole reason I ordered this burger was it was supposed to have cream cheese on it, which I love--not even a hint of it to be found. I sent my entire main dish plate back, and the lovely waitress was nice enough to get it removed from our bill. Even so, it was still a $50 meal for one entree, two beers, and an appetizer. We...
