Jumbo's Diner — Restaurant in Town of Gouverneur

Jumbo's Diner has been a staple of small town life in Gouverneur, NY for as long as I can remember. When it closed it left a big hole in our hearts and our community. Several months ago when I saw work begin to restore the diner I was beyond thrilled. I waited patiently.... ok not really patiently.... I waited. The newly designed and refurbished diner opened a few months ago and in the time since I've heard mixed reviews about food, pricing and staff. Let me set the record straight.

The staff was all smiles from the minute we walked through the door. The new lighting gave the perfect ambiance and I was shocked at the cleanliness and perfect mix of retro and modern decor. It made my heart happy that the original Jumbo's sign from the front of the diner now graces one of the of the inner walls.

Our waitress let us pick the booth we were most comfortable at which was a bonus for me. She took our drink order and gave us a moment with the menus. She came back a few minutes later and we put our order in. We had our food in less than 15 minutes.

The food was perfect! Everything tasted great, was hot and fresh, and was plenty to fill me up. Our waitress checked on us twice to make sure we were doing OK.

When we finished my friend went to pay the bill and was a bit confused. We had both heard that the prices were too high for the value of the food and other nonsensical rumors. We both had two eggs, toast, and homefries, and I added bacon to my order, both with a soda. Our bill was just over $11. So to anyone hearing the unfounded rumors about high prices, they are just that, rumors. You can't even eat at McDonald's for $5.50 a person anymore!

Decided to try jumbos now that it's under new management, as I used to like it before. Disappointed would be an understatement. Service was horrible (and attitude of one waitress was horrible), and they weren't even busy - it was my group of six and two other couples who had both received their food by the time we ordered. Don't expect a refill unless you basically demand one, the couple near us got up and filled their own drink at the machine during one of the many little breaks the two waitresses were in the back for. And when they weren't in the back they were standing there watching the few people in there and looking at empty cups but making no move to do anything about it or check on the tables in general. Our food also took awhile, which is a bit crazy since our 6 meals were the only thing being cooked. Four of us got the fish fry meal (it was ~5pm) - the fish and macaroni and cheese were lukewarm at best and tasted like they had been cooked and sitting in a warmer since late morning. They did offer fries in replacement of the inedible macaroni and cheese though. The two other meals were a burger and a panini, the burger was the only thing that came out hot. And to top it all off the waitress brought the checks and let us pay, I had to ask if I could get a box since I had half my meal left. It wasn't until then she let us know it was $1 for a tiny to go box. This new management should think about some serious changes if they expect to remain open...especially change in staff, or...

Edit: after I wrote this good review I was informed that jumbos charges .50 cents for a glass of tap water (I didn’t inspect the receipt). And they continue to “justify” it on social media. For this reason I’m changing my review from a 4 to a 1 and no longer recommend.

First time here since new ownership. Disclaimer, I’m local to this diner. And typically if I don’t have a good review for a local establishment I won’t leave one at all. But this IS a good review. I ordered the cheeseburger deluxe with fries and my buddies son ordered a BLT with fries. He must have enjoyed it because he ate it all. The waitress never asked how I wanted my burger cooked so I let it ride to see how it was cooked. It was medium-well. Perfect. The patty was on the verge of being too small for the bun, but it was a delicious burger. The fries were waffle fries(which I like) and so I cleaned my plate. Waitress was nice and attentive. Atmosphere is really nice for a diner(which it has been) but the prices now seem to reflect diner food, which it is. I will definitely be back and recommend. Sorry I usually add pictures but forgot...
