Powell's on Round Lake — Restaurant in Town of Hayward

We stopped by as it had beautiful outside water view dining. That's where the good ended. Service was just ok, despite mid afternoon and not busy at all. Food on the menu looked to be average. I guess I expected so much better from a beautiful establishment. Nope. And the pricing is on the higher end for mediocre food. I asked if the shrimp was hand breaded or hand dipped there at the restaurant and server said yes. So I got it. It was a minced shrimp pre battered and frozen.. Like frozen stuff you can get from your own grocery store. The breading was thick and minimal amount of minced shrimp. Super disappointed for the price. Fries... Boring. My friend got the fish sandwich and homemade chips... Fish again was the frozen variety type... Also disappointing considering the area. Came with a bag of potato chips... Like you can't even make your own fresh chips.... The whole meal was a disappointment. Spoke to who I assume was the manager. Who had to school me on the difference between hand breaded at factory versus at the establishment. I hope he slept better that night after the lecture. I wouldn't go back and unfortunately by the looks of other recent posts... Our visit was not any different. Sad, because the establishment and outside dining on the water is so beautiful. Me and some friends were visiting hayward from illinois and this was close to our cabin so we thought we would try it. Generally i don’t like leaving reviews unless it’s positive, however, as someone who has worked as both line cooks and as a waitress the food and service were both subpar. You can tell the burger is frozen, it was very dry, the menu states that all burgers are cooked to medium unless otherwise stated and out of 5 people everyone’s burger was well done. The fries were just gross, you could tell they were fried in the same oil as the fish, and that the oil was not clean. The fries came out with a brown hard exterior, and had a “crust” on them, to me that indicates the oil is not clean. Our waitress was very inattentive, after getting our first round of drinks and ordering food it was about a 20 minute wait for the waitress to come back, after multiple attempts of getting her attention. For the price of the food, it was not worth it, for a minimum 15$ burger without fries i would hope the burgers would at least be fresh and not frozen. I wanted to love this place. It is perfectly located, right off the water. So easy to drive up or come on your boat, and the facility itself is actually super nice. Everything is well taken care and the inside looks great. they have activities outside for kids to do, all in really great shape. I’ve been to many “country or lake” bar and grill type restaurants and many of them are very rundown. This one is not that way at all, and the staff was super nice.

I gave it a 3 star review based purely on the food. The burger was below average, the fries were decent but my wife’s tacos were also super below average. I usually buy a burger when I go out and this one was obviously a cookie cutter frozen burger, with a dry and not so tasty bun. They may have other things on the menu that are good, but the burger was not one of them.
