First off, the food was far overpriced for what you get. These guys are using the same ingredients as any other diner in the area but mark up the prices far more than they should be able to. Maybe they make their own bread but an almost $14 salad should not be made with canned beets and a frozen vege patty (overlooking the entire other can of worms of why your serving a whole, hot vege patty on top of a salad). A side salad on a $11 breakfast sandwich should not be just lettuce tossed in a dressing with a sad tomato on the side. Idk why it seems to be so hard for restaurants like this in Rochester (ones that present the image of being "higher quality food") to just use fresh ingredients. It's not hard to prep ingredients like tomatoes (the one I received was at least 1 or 2 days in the prep container) the day of and to make your own ingredients for stuff like salads from scratch. Pickled beets from scratch are not hard to make. For all of the farms in the area that you have access to, how are you still using processed ingredients from cans and boxes? I could have gone to any one of the diners in the area and gotten the same meal for probably $10 less with the exact same quality of ingredients. Hell, if you used fresh produce, maybe you could even bump the price up a dollar or 2 more!
Second, the service was noticeably lacking. In spite of being told my wife was gluten free (which admittedly, it was our error going to a place that did not seem to have gluten free options ), instead of stating outright they didn't have anything gluten free, the waitress suggested something that supposedly didn't have gluten in it, but actually did. Kinda counterintuitive to the message asking to let servers know of food allergies. I would prefer to be told there are no gluten free options so I can go somewhere else, than to have my wife suffer because your wait staff doesn't know what's in the food. Not to mention, it was kinda odd that myself and my wife, the only table with a person of color at it, were suspiciously the only ones not offered any water. Never offered refills for coffee (in spite of several waitresses walking by our table, drinks empty). It seemed the only time the wait staff seemed interested in serving our table was when we had the check...
Read moreService was friendly and knowledgeable - and we like that the menu changes every two weeks. We were there for the caribbean/island theme. The first two dishes we both thought needed salt - both were on the bland side to us. The rainbow salad (the third course) was my favorite dish - the spicy lime vinaigrette gave it some heat and tartness, the pickled onions gave it some acid and the fresh fruit gave it some natural sweetness. The shrimp curry I'd classify as mild - and the shrimp was slightly over, not yet too rubbery but past tender. The dessert (buneulos with banana ice cream) - I also really liked. I'll gladly pay for exceptional food - the bottom line for me was, for the cost, the food should have excellent, bordering on exceptional - and IMO three of the five dishes should have been better. We also took some things home from the on-site bakery. Some macarons. a lemon loaf cake, and some macaroons. Based on these three things I would gladly purchase anything from there. The macaroons I can't imagine being better - they were exceptional. The Nanaimo bar and lemon loaf cake were very good as well - and all the baked goods were consumed the...
Read moreI have been twice and plan on many more times. What a great experience! We went there on the "return tour of France" night and a "tour of China" night. Both were fantastic. It is a very small restaurant, make reservations for either the first or second seating, and enjoy the ride! The owners try out new menus every two weeks. It's a fixed price, 5 course dinner, and the food is just as good as the presentation. Oh, and they have great breads too. They are only open at night on Fri and Sat, and lunch Thurs - Sat, breakfast Thurs- Sat and all day Sunday.
My one complaint is that they need to do a better job on perhaps their home page of showing their address, directions, and exact hours for ALL 3 meals. It is not obvious to some (OK, me) that "kitchen" menu talks about breakfast and lunch and "edible menu" means dinner. They should spell that out more clearly. And PLEASE can they put their address and phone number in multiple spots, it is well hidden somewhere. And a little map showing where they are located relative to the cross streets. Then they would...
