We were regulars at the old Flame restaurant. It definitely needed some updating, but the new Flame is too modern/white for the atmosphere we are looking for up north. Acoustics are terrible in the building, if there are more than a couple tables of people you have a hard time having a conversation. Food is ok. Old Flame had better pizza and fish. Wish they would have bought the pizza recipe from previous owner. Service was always friendly, sometimes a bit slow, but not bad. Being Fence chain seasonal residents we were very excited to have a new restaurant on the chain, but overall we are disappointed.
Edit: We tried the Flame again this past weekend. It was not busy. 1 table of people inside, Maybe four tables of people outside. our table of seven ordered drinks , appetizers and each had a meal. one person had to ask 3 times for his drink.. the waitress came back to our table after approx 30 minutes and asked us if we had ordered food..(she took our order).. and when our food did come out, our meals had no condiments, and were ok..at best. Our appetizers came out after our meals.. but actually were the best part of our experience once we got them. Our waitress was trying her best butt was obviously not trained well enough to be on her own. We went Saturday afternoon to listen to some live music and the waitresses behind the walkup outside bar was not friendly, or knowledgeable. Overall.. not impressed again... It's too bad because we were so excited to have a nice option accessable...
Read moreCame at 7pm on a Friday night with a party of 6. The Friday menu is not the menu listed online. It only has certain options and none are the salads listed online. Nothing online says "special menu nights". Server brought me a tap beer with snotty floaters in it AFTER she said SHE had to pour 3 beers before it to get rid of MOST of them !?? It was their HOUSE BEER !! CLEAN YOYR LINES 🤮 We mistakenly ordered food anyway. Cheese pizza was MAYBE as good as a frozen Tony's pizza. Pan seared Perch was last night's leftover deep-fried, reheated. Child's hamburger was larger than expected 👍. They were OUT of Cole Slaw, so they thought adequate substitutes were unsweetened kiddie apple sauce cups !? We left five on the table. They were OUT of Baked Potatoes. (REALLY?? Baked potatoes...It's called a grocery store. Send someone !) They were OUT of Mac and Cheese too !! I know what they weren't out of...EMPTY boat slips. They have 23 slips so you can boat to dinner. I'm not sure where they would seat those boaters or who would serve them...🤔 They spent all their money on slips, and they apparently can't afford to buy potatoes or Slaw fixin's or hire someone to clean beer equipment. The indoor environment was extremely LOUD (especially after the outdoor band quit playing) .Very sterile inside. Everything white and grey. Definitely won't be back (even for...
Read moreThis place is a renovation of a classic old supper club, sitting right on the Chain of Lakes in the middle of the Lac du Flambeau Indian Reservation—and the setting is truly stunning. There’s something special about bringing life back to a spot with so much history, and there’s definitely potential here.
The food is good—well-prepared and satisfying—and the staff is honestly fantastic: friendly, helpful, and clearly working hard to make guests feel welcome.
However, while the hospitality and cuisine shine, the design and acoustics leave something to be desired. The interior, though updated, lacks both the warmth and cultural sensitivity that a space on tribal land could thoughtfully embody. It feels more like something you’d find in an urban Chicago restaurant than a place rooted in the Northwoods. More importantly, the acoustics make it difficult to hold a conversation, with sound bouncing harshly off hard surfaces. If the owners had taken more time to consider how the space connects with the local Native community—and how people actually use it—it would feel more grounded, inviting, and comfortable.
Still, it’s a solid spot with heart and a beautiful location. With a little more care in the details, it could become something...
