We ate the perch fry tonight at the Redwood Inn, and it was simply unbelievable. I’ve been eating fried perch my entire life, and have eaten numerous perch frys in Door County, Washington Island, Milwaukee, and now Green Bay. In fact, we used to catch our own perch and fry it up fresh from Lake Michigan. But nonetheless, the fried perch at the Redwood Inn was about the best I’ve ever eaten.
The perch was very lightly breaded, and then cooked perfectly. It was extremely fresh, tender, and juicy. But the breading was the key: it wasn’t too heavy, which would otherwise take away from the fresh taste of the perch. It was just enough to give the fish the right texture, and perfectly complemented the taste of the fish.
Then there was the tartar sauce. It was light and flavorful, without being too sour, and most importantly, without being too sweet. It was a simple tartar with the right amount of acidity. It served as the perfect complement without overpowering the natural taste of the fish. Too often I’ve had tartars that were “fancy” or “elevated” and which basically ended up competing against the natural taste of the fish. That didn’t happen here.
No fish fry is complete without cole slaw, and theirs didn’t disappoint. It was very simple mayo-based slaw, and excellent. The flavors were well balanced, and everything was proportioned perfectly. The slaw wasn’t swimming in sauce, but neither was it dry. We quickly devoured the first bowl, and the server has very happy to bring us another. I should have asked for a third.
The place was packed to the gills (no pun intended), and we waited well over and hour and a half to be seated. And it was worth every minute of the wait. I should point out that the wait was only because of the huge number of customers. In fact, the restaurant was very well run, almost like a well-oiled machine.
Sadly, we don’t live anywhere near Green Bay, and we were just passing through on our way to Door County. But I sure hope that we’re able to visit again sometime, because the meal was simply exceptional....
Read moreSo, this is a somewhat difficult review. I don't like bad reviews in general, but when it is deserved I can't hold back. This was the first and last visit I will be making here. I had never been here before thus didn't know how different a dining experience could be. The first thing that you will notice upon entering is there is no host/hostess. In addition, there is no communication, such as a sign telling you if you should wait or seat yourself. So after standing at the front area for a couple of minutes, we asked an employee if we should seat ourselves. They told us that we had to order at the bar. So we waited at a nearby table to give our order. This was about a 30 minute wait . We than waited about another 30 minutes to be seated where half of our groups food came out. They messed up on the orders and had another couple plates come out with one person waiting almost another 10 minutes to finally get theirs. Now, the only highlight is that you get alot of food for the money, but the quality seems just okay at best. Now, for the shocker.....they don't accept credit cards at all. They do have an ATM if you need cash though. I think there is almost no reason in 2021 for a restaurant to not be able to process credit cards. With that being said, I saw two signs (one in the back of the place on a door that looks like should be closed and on a wall as you are leaving). Thankfully we had enough cash to cover. So, this would have been a one star review but for what you get, it is a decent value in food. The service, lack of communication, lack of popular payment options, all bring this rating down. I know different does not mean bad but there is a reason why the majority of restaurants operate in a similar...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Redwood Inn and I must say, I am blown away by the experience. I was recommended this place by a few co-workers when I mentioned my craving for a good fish fry. And let me tell you, they were spot on - Redwood Inn has the best fish fry in the Green Bay area.
From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted with warm smiles and excellent service. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, with Green Bay Packers memorabilia adorning the walls. I got there early as advised and took a stroll around the place, which was quite enjoyable. Time flew by quickly and before I knew it, my table was ready.
But let's talk about the food - it was divine. The fish fry was cooked to perfection, with a crispy and flavorful batter that melted in my mouth. The portion size was generous and the sides were equally delicious. The servers were attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. I truly appreciated their stellar service.
I highly recommend Redwood Inn to anyone looking for a fantastic dining experience. The atmosphere, service, and most importantly, the food, were all top-notch. I can confidently say that this will be my go-to place for a great fish fry. So if you're in the Green Bay area, do yourself a favor and visit Redwood Inn - you won't be disappointed. Five...
