My family has been shopping here since I was a child. My mother and grandmother would go to all of the country stores and quilt shops around and bring my sisters and I along on what we called "field trips", sometimes very long car rides was the more preferred term when we would fall asleep in the back of the car. But it was always right before lunch time we would make the final stop to Oak Hill Bulk Foods.
Back then it was just the single building and small parking lot with a ton of baked goods and dry stock. It was still always a treat for my mom to get us snacks for home aka sneak into a bag before we left the parking lot. My grandmother passed away in September of 2011 and one of her favorite things to get besides the smoked pork chops was "Keuka bread". A loaf of bread made with corn meal that tasted like the best white bread, english muffin, and corn bread mixed together. I had the honor to speak to Laretta (the owner) on the phone the other day and ask if they were still making it because I could never find it as they expanded.
What tickled me wasn't just her kind voice and enthusiasm as she was listening to my story but she actually went and looked for the recipe to make it so I could surprise my family. It's expirences like this that make you keep coming back to support local businesses and admire their growth over the years. I will continue to keep spreading the word about this store so many more can enjoy what my family and I have. Thank you Ms. Laretta for bringing back...
Read moreI have shopped at Oak Hill Bulk Foods more than several times throughout the years - even before when it was a much smaller establishment. I must say that I will be doing my shopping at the other bulk food stores in the area, because the customer service has become very disappointing. I purchased a 50 lb bag of powdered whole milk (so I thought). When I got the milk home I had to research how t prepare the milk only to find out I had been given a butter milk mix for baking and food processing. The bag indicated nothing of the sort. When I called to let the store know about the mistake, I was assured a refund ($150). I even advised them that the powdered milk had been transferred to brand new, 5 gallon food grade buckets, but the milk had not been used. I was told that was okay, they would be able to use the powder in the bakery. I drove 35 minutes to be denied my full refund. "We can only give you back half because it was opened". Well if it said "Powdered Butter Milk" on the bag, I could understand that. But, this was not my mistake. It was Oak Hill's. I'm really glad there are other bulk food stores in the area to choose from, because I will not be returning to Oak Hill. Also, the overhead costs are showing in the prices. Not the same store I...
Read moreI had just about the worst experience at this so called restaurant/market. First of all, the food in the cafe made me feel quite sick. It took me 2-3 days to recover from it. Don’t ask me why I left a tip because there is (no service) but you almost feel compelled to leave one! My boyfriend didn’t feel much better than myself either—complained about stomach cramps, etc. This is the first time I’ve taken the time to write a review, but I felt it necessary. So, beware. Go here at your own peril... We did wonder around the market before we got sick and I must say what a huge disappointment and complete waste of time that was. Inferior product and overpriced to boot. I’m really surprised how business owners can operate like this and survive in the process. Mind-blowing really. But, when you venture out into the Boonies this is what you can sometimes...
