We found the Buckhorn Supper Club on Lake Koshkonong via Ron Faiola's - Wisconsin Supper Clubs book. I shared some efficient communication with Shelley via their Facebook page while making reservations. Since this was our first time, we double checked our route - but really not necessary as Buckhorn Supper Club is conveniently located less than a five minute drive off of I90 at exit 163. Take 59 East and follow the well lit signs. Our table was ready on arrival but we wanted to take a few minutes and visit the bar and sample a Wisconsin tradition - a brandy old fashioned. While we were sipping our cocktails, enjoying the sweeping views of Lake Koshkonong, Chico - the Buckhorn patriarch, stopped by to introduce the Buckhorn and welcome us - what a nice personal touch. Chico shared some "Buckhorn history", the outside terrace and lake views, and some brief adventures of their 17 years of ownership. Chico, Dawn, Shelley, and Kevin all took time to sign our copy of Wisconsin Supper Clubs - fun. We were seated at a window table and promptly greeted by Kim. Kim reviewed the specials of the evening, collected our drink and appetizer order while answering our questions about the Buckhorn and then she shared this Mark Twain quote - “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” - very refreshing to hear how much she enjoys her job and working for the Pope family. We were definately enjoying our visit. Our Bluegill filets / appetizer were served with our cocktails - Southern Comfort Old Fashioned and a local beer with color and body. Tasty. For dinner she had the Chilean Sea Bass with a house salad and baked potato and he had the Friday Night Fish Fry with a house salad, home made thousand island dressing and fries. The presentations were excellent and the food was delicious - what we could eat of it - we opted to take some home with us. Kim was wonderful and is a gracious ambassador for the Buckhorn Supper Club, she was attentive and responsive without being obtrusive. When she stopped to check after the initial entree service, she asked, "Is everything the way you'd like it tonight?" - I found it to be an exceptionally professional twist on "How's everything?" - well done Kim. Great location, Great people, Great service, Great food - equals an exceptional Wisconsin dining experience. We had a lot fun and really enjoyed our evening with the hospitable Pope family. Take the time to visit Buckhorn Supper Club and enjoy some "Old Fashioned" Wisconsin hospitality - I am confident you'll...
Read moreMy two friends and I could not have had a better experience at the Buckhorn Supper Club. I had read reviews of it in Madison Magazine and other regional publications but none of has had been there before. Two of us were from northern Illinois suburbs and one from southern Wisconsin, and we felt like we discovered a whole new area we did not know much about. Chico, the owner, was friendly and told us about the history of the area as it was the center of the old Black Hawk Indian wars in the 1830s. It made me want to learn more about Black Hawk and that time in history. He also told us about the WI-DOT Finch archeological find in 2010 and again in 2013. As construction workers were building the nearby 26- Bypass, they stumbled upon a concentrated and varied cache of Native American relics. Construction was halted for a few years and it turned out to be one of the most important artifact sites in Wisconsin. Besides being fascinating to learn, it was quite pleasant just being in the spacious, supper club lounge. The dining room is simple and cozy with wonderful lake views. My friends both said they had never had such good duck. They liked the cherry sauce and rice stuffing. I loved the spinach artichoke appetizer served with slightly garlic-y toasted french bread. The appetizer was seasoned perfectly and had a unique smokey taste. Salads were very fresh. I'm a vegetarian and the waitress and kitchen were fine with that. I was pleased with side dishes, salad, appetizer, and dessert, I had plenty of excellent food to enjoy. The desserts alone would have been worth the drive--do not miss the peanut butter pie. In general it was a little expensive but certainly worth it. The Pope family could not have been nicer and the general atmosphere was friendly and relaxing. Our waitress was accommodating and pleasant. Before we left we were planning when...
Read moreGreat Supper Club We took a drive down to Lake Koshkonong to have dinner at Buckhorn Supper Club we got there a few minutes after they opened which is 4 p.m. on Fridays we got there early as I had heard it gets busy very quickly which it did shortly after we arrived. They do take reservations if you want to go that route. We were seated immediately at our table by a window with a lake view and our server was at our table promptly to bring us water and see what we wanted for beverages my companion got a Brandy Old Fashioned sweet which she said was very good I got Gray's Root Beer in a bottle which was excellent. We placed our orders when the server brought our drinks. I ordered the fried fish with a baked potato with a cup of clam chowder on the side my companion ordered the baked fish with baked potato after putting in our order our server returned with Cole slaw and warm rolls and crunchy bread sticks that come with the meal these come with small containers of cheese spread and butter they were all excellent and were enjoyed. My clam chowder was not far behind and it was piping hot and also very good with a good percentage of clams to potatoes and not a tough clam piece nor undercooked potato to be found. When our entrèes arrived they were hot and perfect the baked potatoes were perfectly done and my fried fish was perfectly cooked and the coating was very light and held up well to the fish my companions baked fish was also perfect and she said it was excellent. Our server was great keeping our water glasses filled and checking on us to make sure everything was to our liking. It was a great meal in a great Supper Club with good people on the shores of Lake Koshkonong and we will be back to try something else on the menu in the future like maybe the prime rib which I had heard was excellent we will...
