Terrible. We came here on a rainy night, with a group for dinner. Obviously this place would be amazing on a lovely warm summer evening but basing your entire restaurant concept on the weather in the North East is stupid at best. When we arrived, all the doors to the deck were wide open. There was quite the breeze coming in, some would call it whipping wind. It was not until it started pouring rain that the staff decided it was time to close the doors. Considering the people seated at the tables closest to said doors were literally being poured on, that was probably a good idea. This involved moving all of their tables to close said doors. The super models did not look happy about having their instagram moment ruined!
I’m sure the concept of filling out a form and ordering your meal at a counter works when the place is slammed. But once the season is over, the owners would be wise to transition it to a traditional service restaurant. When you are paying fine dining prices, but have to get up in the middle of dinner to order an additional bottle of wine at the counter and pay, while 8 servers are standing by the bar looking at their phones… something is not working.
Anyway, dinner comes. Large platter of dips, which was supposed to be for 2-3 people with three pieces of sliced pita. Not nearly enough for the amount of dips. We asked for more bread. Again, you must go to the counter to order. Yes, we had to pay $6 for extra pita, which really wasn’t extra because there was not enough to begin with.
We ordered the mussels, which were old, and inedible. By that time most of us had lost our appetite. They refunded us for them, but the adjustment was done on only one card, which left us having to figure out the finances after dinner. No apologies from the kitchen for serving us extremely questionable food. Thank god my husband has a good nose and stopped us from getting sick.
My suggestion, like other reviewers, go for a drink on a summer afternoon, pretend you are on Ibiza, don’t bring a dog, and eat...
Read more2 stars solely for the waiter Uriell who was a delightful Frenchman. The cute but standoffish hostess explained you order off a plastic coated menu by circling a paper menu which was attached to a clip board. I would accept this at a facility that charged accordingly however the restaurant is extremely pricey. Getting past that strange encounter you now must put your mask back on and PAY IN ADVANCE for your meal with a cashier at a cashier stand.
What was perplexing even further when we asked to order our wine and wanted to relax with our 1st course we were told no, we had to order everything together. The bottle of white wine came out room temperature. They poured all of us a glass, needless to say they took it back and returned with a cold bottle, bread, appetizers and the entrees all at once.
We started with a shrimp dish for (2) which we were required to remove the shell and the black veins. Maybe because we arrived late in the evening and the kitchen help wanted to go home I do not know.
I did ask about the tipping procedure and Uriell said the front of the house staff, waiters, hostesses, busboys all pool their tips, but not the chefs. At the end of the meal we left a $50 tip on the table thinking how if we were not with great friends what a disappointment the meal was. Very costly and certainly not worth it.
Nice facility however there was a huge disconnect with the ordering system. We order 2 lobster entrees for (2 people) $84 & $74 for the other and they did not give us the small metal forks to poke out the meat. Only upon request did we get a disposable wood utensil which was a sad disapointment at the price point of the dinners.
I always give kudos when restaurants food is good however I can't in good conscious compliment anyone but the waiter. I would pass this up for one of the many other delightful locations...
Read moreIn mourning for Orient by the Sea, the lovely low key restaurant that was here before Duryeas's took over, where you could get a burger, or a steak, fish and chips and a cocktail and glass of wine with a lovely view. It was a great place to eat before getting the Cross Sound Ferry to New London. The view is still lovely but the fancy new place is a huge disappointment. I went alone after a walk around the Point as I have many times in the past, and although they were happy to seat me the menu seems geared to groups of at least 6. NO small portions. I ordered an appetizer size Falafel and the Watermelon salad which was HUGE. And barely edible. Swamped with Dill and the melon looked old and tired - that gelatinous look tells you it has not been freshly prepared. The Falafel was so salty it had no other flavor. I tried 2 bites; the 2nd to make sure I was correct. There were several piles of Mediterranean style dips to go with the Pita; what appeared to be a yoghurt, another of chopped tomatoes, but both so laden with Dill - again with the Dill - that it all became a bit overwhelming. There was something green that had no flavor. My bill - paid in advance - was almost $100 with the tip and including a fairly ordinary glass of Rose wine for $15. Water was $4! Yes, no free water. After I had given up on the food I called my waitress over to let her know I didn't need take home containers and she sent the manager to speak to me. I had eaten almost nothing but I did drink the wine. She gave me $26 back on my credit card. So a glass of wine and a nice view cost me $70. I won't be going there again and I imagine not many locals will either. They will have to rely on the boats moored in the Marina who have no choice. Advice to boaters - Greenport has many great restaurants! Dock there first if...
