Dined here for our anniversary following rave reviews from a friend. I could see how this establishment would earn raves from people but sadly it fell short of our expectations. The biggest standout for me feeling this way is the lack of vegetarian entrees and limited pescatarian options. Vegan is not even considered but for one salad. I probably would feel different if I was a meat eater as many of the entrees passing by looked hot and well prepared. The entire building is beautifully restored however we were seated in what looked like an old parlor room. It felt a bit like I was sitting in a living room, not an upscale dining restaurant. We had reservations and were seated about 3 inches away from the working fireplace, which the hostess immediately said she could turn off if it was too hot. I gave it a try as it was warming the room however I was very uncomfortable with one part of my face & body being hot. They were very gracious about turning it off but I felt bad asking, especially when I heard another server say later “Hey we need to turn the fireplace on.”
Prior to coming in, I checked the menu online and was prepared to order either the cod or shrimp alfredo. Our server AJ was friendly, professional and attentive. AJ told us upon ordering drinks that they were out of the cod, which was disappointing as I had looked forward all week to trying it. Hearing that really put a damper on our celebratory occasion. I noted the shrimp alfredo was nowhere to be found on the menu. I don’t eat salmon so I was limited to the mussels and shrimp. I expected a decent amount of shrimp but was given three on a plate overflowing with mussels and bread. I ate it because I was hungry but was not happy with it. If this had been primarily a shrimp dish, it would have been good. My husband had a burger which he enjoyed and we both felt the calamari appetizer was exceptional.
Our friend talked extensively about the drinks so I was excited to try. I ordered a vodka martini but was given a gin martini. AJ was very gracious about getting it remade however as someone who doesn’t make demands of waitstaff, I felt bad asking. When I received the correct martini it was just ok.
The night culminated with me using the bathroom, which had what I thought was a sturdy deadbolt lock which clearly indicated “Occupied” or “Vacant.” I locked the door but because the door frame is old someone was able to open it as I was using the bathroom. For the level of dining they are offering, I would strongly suggest having a strong lock on the unisex bathroom. The experience was embarrassing.
I would be open to trying this place again for drinks and apps. The outdoor dining area and porch looked very inviting, so I would not mind trying it on a warm night. If you’re plant based or pescatarian, I would suggest looking elsewhere unless you’re good with combining small plates or just having a salad...
Read moreBeautiful renovation on a historic property-does not a restaurant make! After months of passing Old Stone we finally gave it a try. My first instinct was to run when the host tried to seat my husband and I at the bar -where we had enough room for only one of us to sit down, as we past several open tables on the patio and in the dining room. Actually-I did run -but the host chased us down , and said that he did in fact find a table out on the patio. We sat out there, ordered and then, what can only be described as a warning from above - thunder started rolling in. My husbands “bourbon-neat” arrived filled with crushed ice and water from the soda gun. My ceasar salad-no anchovies-came with two big oily fillets sitting in the middle. Just as my husband was served his tiny little cheese plate ($24) the rain began. This was no ordinary rain. It was pounding-and coming in side ways. This was the precise time the staff decided we all had to come inside-even though we had the cover of huge umbrellas out there. We were all drenched-but the staff, who had to gather up everything, were soaked. The bus boy said he could try and “salvage” the cheese plate-but at this point the crackers and grapes were floating-so we said don’t worry about it. The manager came over and said the uneaten cheese plate would be taken off of our bill. The staff politely reminded us several times that the kitchen was backed up- which is fine-but after two hours and fifteen minutes of waiting we were all getting annoyed. Luckily there was a lovely couple who were also refugees from the back patio sitting near us- so our shared pain was comforting. The restaurant did bring out complimentary chicken wings- but at this point, I, like many others trapped in this limbo- was planning my escape. Maybe if we just pay for what we had -even those complimentary wings- this place would release us from our purgatory. No such luck. Our sad, and salty meals arrived finally, and they were NOT worth the wait. My husband’s burger bun was dry, as were the comically large potato wedges on his plate. I never mind paying for quality-but these meals could have been made in any tavern in town. Over salted, under plated and just not good. As soon as those plates hit the table-we asked for the check. We “finished” the meals, and just stood up-as if we were mounting a prison break- and tracked down our waitress-“please let us just pay and leave!!” We cried. That cheese plate was still on the tab. They begrudgingly took it off, and we paid and ran. If there was a silver lining to this hostage situation- it was that the couple seated near us-and others in our shared misery- shared a few laughs at the absurdity of it all. They made it bearable. The waitstaff were just overwhelmed -it’s not their fault. This is poor management-both front and back of the house. Overpriced, understaffed, and poor leadership- a...
Read moreDisappointing. The restaurant is beautifully situated and landscaped though it is not far from a dairy farm which wafted over as we got out of the car. We had reserved a table inside so not a problem. As we were ushered in we stepped over an asparagus spear that had fallen off a plate right in the middle of the entrance. We were seated in a dining area behind the bar. The dining area is somewhat dark and on every wall hung cheap looking paintings of colonial scenes and colonial people. There were flowers in a vase on the window sill that were wilted. There were no table cloths but paper placemats. More of a pub vibe than anything else. The chairs were comfortable. The service was decent. The martini was decent. The bread they served two people was three small pieces of focaccia on the stale side with marinara sauce. It looked like the type you get at the shoprite bakery. The website menu does not match the restaurant menu. Four specials in addition to the menu were a salad and three different cuts of beef prepared three different ways.We ordered the maryland crab cakes to share. I ordered the salmon with mango watermelon salsa/salad and shrimp. I was very specific that I wanted the salmon medium rare and that I don't like overcooked salmon. My husband ordered pappardella with a short rib ragu. The crab cakes were good a little mushy but had a little kick no discernable crab chunks the micro greens were so minimal they were more like a sprinkle of parsley hardly worth the mention. The meals came out and my salmon was well done and salty I sent it back relatively quickly. The pappardelle with short rib ragu was salty. My husband liked it though. By the time my salmon came back out he was done with his meal and again the salmon was over cooked. The 3 shrimp that came with the salmon were also so over cooked that they were in tight balls salty and rubbery. The mango/ watermelon salad tasted like the fruit was not ripe and lacked seasoning needed some lime squeezed on it and a little salt. There were no salt and peppers on the table so it wasn't something you could remedy on your own there was no sauce for the fish as described on the menu. It looked like the salad and shrimp that were on the plate I sent back were just tossed back on the plate with the recooked salmon. The salmon was cut too small for the chefs to cook properly and the little bit in the middle that was not cooked to oblivion didn't taste like good quality salmon. At this price point you can have an excellent meal at Artemio's Prime and Proper in Ringwood. I cannot recommend...
