This review refers to Los Dos Gallos; Carmelitas is the new name now that they have new owners (summer 2018). I have only been there once and the cooks were the same. But I don't understand why they changed the name and I haven't been back. Time will tell. (Google changed the name of the restaurant that my review was left for - I don't think that's a good thing - it's the same location but it's not the same.)
This is the place to go for excellent home style Mexican food. It honestly doesn't get better than this. I'm from Texas and, while not Tex-Mex, the dishes are high quality and made with the love that only abuelas bring to food.
It's not fancy. It's counter order, table serve. The menu has tacos, burritos, tortas, breakfast items (the chilaquiles are awesome), soups, and some really excellent plates - camarones diabla, rellenos, tostadas, etc. But the star of the plates are, to me, the sopes. Wow! Perfect crunch, perfect flavors, perfect quantities. And they have menudo every day, so you don't have to wait for the weekends!
If you want something Grandma would cook, look no further. If you want Americanized fodder, keep on moving. This is a treasure and should be...
Read moreMy friend and I, both new to the area, decided to try out a new restaurant for lunch. The place had a fantastic vibe from the moment we walked in. Upbeat calypso music filled the air, and the combination of natural light and stylish décor created a great atmosphere. The server patiently explained the menu to us. We ordered at the register and then took a number for our table. The service was exceptional - our server anticipated our needs and was always attentive. For lunch, I had a delicious chicken taco plate with a refreshing horchata drink. My friend opted for the chicken tortas, a Mexican-style sandwich. We also shared a plate of Rollitos Encanelados for dessert. The complimentary tortilla chips and fresh salsa were a delightful bonus. The food was amazing, and the entire experience was so enjoyable that we decided to return for their Tuesday Taco special! I highly recommend this restaurant, but be aware that parking can be a challenge due to nearby...
Read moreDelicious authentic Mexican food!!! It’s crazy that I have lived in the Fremont area for several years and not once visited this restaurant. If you’re looking for authentic Mexican food, this will be your new favorite spot. My hubby and I woke up on a Sunday wanting menudo, so I searched nearby places and Carmelita’s came up first, after reading the great reviews we decided to go here. Little did we know that we were going to end up finding menudo that tasted like home, with options of adding tendon, pata, and nervio. Then to top it off, handmade tortillas!! The pricing is fair and the ambiance is the perfect setting to enjoy your food.
In addition to the amazing menudo, I highly suggest trying their quesabirras! These were so good! You get them with a side of consumé and we added rice and beans to our plate to make it a nice combination plate.
If your live in the tri-city area, this place is a must try, you will not regret...
