Sometimes it's better when you don't meet your heroes. My wife and I had the rare opportunity to have a full weekend away from our kids. Our longtime occasional babysitter, who, because of inflation, had to leave us to take on other clients who needed her full time, offered a special treat and surprise for me to give my wife for Mother's Day by canceling her other bookings to watch our kids...all 4 of them! the weekend after Mother's Day. I planned a surprise getaway at Harrah's Southern California and was able to get 9:15 dinner reservations through Open Table for Friday night (Saturday was all booked up well into the late evening) the only time they had open during our stay.

I have to admit, I'm a fan of Mr. Ramsay. While I never tasted his food, I enjoyed streaming him online preparing his dishes or dishing out the critiques to his chef's in training.

While the presentation was impressive, the tastes were not.

I didn't know what to expect from this place: linen tablecloths at the least. Well, it looked like an upscale diner or a trendy bar. You'd figure if you were spending upwards of $250.00 per couple that you wouldn't be eating on bare wood tables...

That's not to say it wasn't finished in nice materials with a luxury vibe. I think it looked the part of an expensive restaurant. But it was loud. I mean LOUD. However, it was apropos with the decor again leaning towards a trendy bar type of atmosphere.

Our server was well versed on the menu, but it was a rehearsed line. I take it they wanted to push the beef Wellington and the lobster risotto (I admit, we took the bait). When our server left our table, she went to the next one and said exactly what she said to us.

I went with the prix fixe menu for $104.00 without the wines (appetizer, main course and dessert) that consisted of the scallops, beef Wellington and the sticky toffee dessert. I regret not going with the wine pairings for $150.00 as three glasses of wine paired with each course is a relative bargain for an additional $46.00...

My wife decided on the crispy skin salmon ($39.00) and lobster risotto ($39.00). She had the rose Grenache ($19.00) and I had the Paloma cocktail ($19.00). My cocktail had casa dragones tequila, one of my favorites.

We also ordered Ty Nant sparkling water (my new favorite) for an eye watering $10.00/bottle. I really liked this water so I looked it up while we were waiting for our starters and it's roughly $60/case of 12 bottles, so they are marking up the water 100%.

They have still, house water (their filtered tap, I'm sure) so you don't have to spend $$ on water if you don't want to.

The scallops were a bit salty. It was cooked alright. Another minute or so and it would have been too rubbery. As it was, the chef took it out maybe 30 seconds too late. I didn't taste scallops as much as I tasted salt.

The lobster risotto was spot on. The texture of the lobster was just right and the flavor delicious; the risotto, likewise. I really liked this dish and will definitely get it again. My wife wanted the wagyu meatballs, but she ordered the lobster because of my, ahem, influence...

Her salmon was delicious with a crispy crunch to the skin that was complimented by the creamy white beans resting beneath it. Again, it's a dish we'd order again.

However, the beef Wellington was quite salty. I thought it was the demi-glace so I tried it without the sauce. Nope, too salty. Maybe it was the puff pastry outer shell. So I ate it just the meat. Nope, too salty. I even asked my wife her opinion and she agreed, too salty. So... I sent it back.

If Mr. Ramsay were in the kitchen, I could imagine him yelling at the chefs and throwing things asking if anyone even tried the food before sending it out. A manager or senior wait staff came out after my replacement meal was delivered and asked if it was better. Indeed it was substantially better. She apologized and said that with the combination of the prosciutto and the rock salt that it might have been overly salty as the rock salt was larger crystals than traditional salt....

My partner and I were so excited to go to Hells Kitchen. We are celebrating my birthday and this was something to take off our checklist. To be completely honest the experience was mediocre.

First off, I want to say when making reservations. The system asks if you are celebrating something. I stated I was celebrating my birthday. When we got in to check for our reservation. The hostess asked if we were celebrating anything. I stated my birthday. The three girls said Happy Birthday. But nothing special happened after that. So I am just wondering what is the point of being asked what are you celebrating while making reservations? If the restaurant isn’t going to do anything, then you can go without asking the extra question. It just didn’t feel special at all.

Second, the tables for two are a little small. It reminds me more of a small cafe feel than an extravagant restaurant experience. The ambiance was okay nothing special. Because the restaurant was attached to a casino it definitely felt like a casino ambiance. We had a table that we were sat by. They were drunk, stumbling, and reaching over to make out on a couple of occasions. We love, love but there is a time and place for everything. They also knocked over something on their table. Because they were literally in my vertical peripheral, it was hard not to notice. So that brought the ambiance down.

But we were there for the food of course, so that’s what we were excited about. I thought my food was good. I would give it about 6.5/10. I don’t eat meat so I was pleasantly surprised with the vegetarian options. My partner ordered scallops. I saw the scallops and when I first saw them I said to myself they those look overcooked but my partner didn’t say anything so I went to eating my food. He’s not really much to complain about food because he doesn’t want to be mean about it. But I told him constructive criticism is not being mean especially if you are paying $29 for 3 scallops. The scallops ended being dry and overcooked. They were also cold when they came out. It looked like restaurant was trying to combat sauce and extras on the plate with serving 3 scallops. The quality was just not there and it brought his experience down because of it. The asparagus, vegetarian risotto and the sticky toffee pudding cake was great. So it made up for that. Just to tell how over he was the experience our waiter asked us an end question and he completely blocked out what he said because he was ready to go (Sorry to our waiter). It wasn’t intentional the food was just bringing down his experience.

Note for kitchen: Please put more love into your food. When something like scallops come out dry, rubbery, and overcooked. Then cold when served. It makes you wonder how the steak and other seafood is prepared. Paying attention to detail, makes it seem like you care.

Overall the experience was okay. I feel like it’s a place that is overhyped because of the name that’s on it. But it felt like the dining experience was dining at like an Applebee’s or Chili’s for us. Glad we checked it off the list but it doesn’t leave a we want to be back experience.

Side note: The smoke in the casino has nothing to do with the restaurant but since you have to get to the restaurant by entering the casino. The strong smoke smell is a huge killer when entering a restaurant. A separate entrance would be a wonderful idea to combat that.

3 out of 5 stars and that’s overrating the experience.

** It looks like on another review someone was celebrating their birthday as well. And they got a birthday candle with their dessert but nothing came out with our. Sometimes it is the little things that...

For a special birthday celebration, I decided to visit Hell's Kitchen at Harrah's. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by the staff, who even surprised us with a candle to set the celebratory mood—a small but thoughtful touch that made the evening feel even more special.

We were seated in the main area of the restaurant. While it had a vibrant atmosphere, it was quite loud, making it difficult to have a conversation without raising our voices. If you're looking for a quieter, more intimate dining experience, this may not be the best spot.

That said, the staff here was nothing short of amazing. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely seemed to care about our experience. Their service certainly contributed to the overall positive vibe of the night.

Now, let's talk about the food. The Beef Wellington, a signature dish, was simply perfect—cooked to perfection with a tender, flavorful center wrapped in a delicate puff pastry. The sticky toffee pudding was divine, and the salted peanut butter crunch was also to die for—both desserts were rich, indulgent, and well worth the calories. The Jidori chicken was another highlight, packed with flavor and cooked just right, maintaining its juiciness.

On the downside, the mac n' cheese was a bit of a letdown for me. I'm not a big fan of bacon, and the dish had a strong bacon flavor that overpowered the cheese. Given the caliber of the restaurant, I expected something more balanced and refined from such a classic dish.

The creamy espresso martini, however, was a hit. It was perfectly crafted, providing a smooth, rich coffee flavor with just the right amount of kick—an ideal way to end the meal.

One of my biggest complaints had nothing to do with the restaurant itself but with Harrah's. The signage to find Hell's Kitchen was poor, and navigating through the smoky casino to get to the restaurant was unpleasant. However, once inside Hell's Kitchen, it felt like a breath of fresh air, reminiscent of the iconic Vegas location. The interior is beautiful, modern, and captures the essence of what you'd expect from a place with the Hell's Kitchen name.

In conclusion, Hell's Kitchen at Harrah's offers a memorable dining experience, especially for special occasions like birthdays. While there were a few minor hiccups, the exceptional food and outstanding service more than made up for them. Just be prepared for a noisy dining area and the challenge of finding your way through Harrah's. But once you arrive, you're in...
