Ocean Bakery – Could Be So Much Better

I really wanted to like Ocean Bakery. The food itself is pretty decent, but the service just doesn’t match up. Every time I’ve gone, it takes about 20–30 minutes just to get a sandwich. And the frustrating part? Once the sandwich is finally ready, that’s when they start making the rest of your order—like coffee or frozen drinks.

So you end up eating your food while still waiting on your drinks, which makes no sense. It would be so much smoother if they handed out drinks and bakery items right after you pay, so you have something to enjoy while waiting.

There’s definitely potential here, but the process just feels clunky and inefficient. Hopefully they rethink how they run things, because the experience right now is honestly...

The food is amazing a fresh! What impressed me most, though, is the honesty of the staff. We got breakfast here the other day on our way to El Yunque and Luquillo. When we got all the way into El Yunque I realized I left my bag with my cannon 5DMIV camera inside it on the back on my chair. I felt so sick, certain someone found it and took it. We drove down far enough to get cell service and called the bakery. They had found it and put it in the managers office. They kept it safe until we could go get it the next morning. They even made sure to ask our friend who went to pick it up what was inside the bag to ensure it was going back to the right people. Back in Delaware/Maryland, that would’ve been gone. We were struggling to translate the menu in English, and I believe it was the owner that came and helped us out. He went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and cooked whatever we wanted! Food was excellent, bread and pastries were heavenly and the coffee hit the spot.

I took off one star because I would have liked to try something on the menu that I have never tried before, instead of coming up with something I know I will like. I hope the owner reads this and considers an English version of their vast menu on the wall. This place was recommended by an Airbnb host, which I agree. But could be better...
