I debated writing this review, finally decided it could be helpful to someone.
On a Monday morning, the morning of fifth anniversary, I called HK's to make a dinner reservation for my wife and I. The gentleman who answered was very nice, and took my reservation for 9:00 PM. I asked about flowers or some special table setting to make the event special, and was told it'd be taken care of.
After a beautiful day on the lake we got dressed and arrived at the restaurant right at 9:00, only to be told at the front desk that HK's is not open on Mondays. I explained to the young man at the front desk that I had just made my reservation that morning, and so he simply repeated that HK's was not open, and threw an area restaurant guide across the desk to me.
At 9:00 on a Monday night, it was pretty late to try get to any nice, romantic restaurant appropriate to the occasion, but luckily we were able to, and had a fantastic meal at JB Hook's. What happened with HK's was an honest mistake I'm sure, but to me is indicative of a staff that is poorly trained and a management team that just doesn't care. There's really no reason why they should, being a tourist area they really don't need to worry about repeat business, new tourists will just keep coming every week.
I say this mostly because of the response to this issue by the staff and management. The young man at the front desk, for example, who made it very clear to me that there wasn't going to be any apology or even acknowledgment of the mistake. Second, having been a restaurant manager and a restaurant owner in the past, I decided to call the next morning, thinking that maybe a manager would like to know that this occurred, in order to correct the problem. The manager I spoke to was apologetic I suppose, but the lack of caring was again quite evident. I was told by this manager that I would be receiving a call from someone up the chain of command, and he took my name and number. This call never came, further confirming that management really just doesn't care.
Lastly, as I'm writing this I notice that the Google listing for HK's as well as their own website still lists their hours as them being open on Mondays. I happen to know that the Google listing hours are listed as submitted by the business, and can be changed at any time. So be warned, you may have a great experience at HK's, but if the occasion is special to you, I'd advise you to choose a place with a better trained staff and a better dedication to customer service.
Thanks to Jake and the entire staff at JB Hook's, you really made my anniversary special, and saved the day after HK's...
Read moreThis place actually has good food. We ordered to go from them last night and had no issues. Food was good. Order was timely. We were impressed, considering the mediocre reviews. After a long day at the pool today, and with it being Saturday and busy everywhere else, we decided to make reservations at HK’s for dining in this time. When we arrived, we were warned of a 45 top that was slowing down the kitchen, but we were fine with a longer wait for our food as we had plenty of catching up to do. What we didn’t expect was to be given our drinks and ignored completely for the next thirty minutes. When I was finally able to flag down our waitress, Barbara, and ask why everyone else had bread at their table but us, she snapped, “You have to ask for it.” Which is the first time in my 39 years that a restaurant has told me that. (FYI, we saw you exactly once in our first forty minutes, Barbara. When would you have liked us to ask you?)
Everything we asked Barbara for tonight—the few times she did bother to come to our table—was met with attitude and condescension. She made it very clear she didn’t care to serve us or treat us with even a shred of decorum as she was making plenty of tips on her 45 top, so I gave Barbara’s tip to the musicians who were entertaining us this evening. Barbara, here’s my tip for you. I suggest you find a different career path. You are by far the rudest, most disrespectful waitress I have ever encountered.
Honestly though, it’s my fault! I shouldn’t have scheduled a 45 top during dinner on a Saturday night in the only restaurant at the hotel serving dinner, with only three waitresses working. Perhaps, if I hadn’t done that, Barbara wouldn’t have been so pissed at us, and would’ve provided better service. I’m sorry, Barbara. I’m sorry, HK’s. I...
Read moreJust say no. Evening of Wednesday July 27, 2022. We have favorite places due to places such as this not measuring up. I did relay my concerns about the steak to the waitress. She said she would let the manager know. I was a single diner. Appeared to be a single waitress serving ten tables until just before I left. Pre meal $20 "old fashioned" drink was too sweet. Small glass filled with same ice served in their sodas. All the food was served cold. Possibly because food left sitting after preparation. I noticed that instead of serving one table at a time, several tables at once -we were served assembly line style. As a result, the appetizer onion rings were cold & mealy. After a bad drink and appetizer, I called off the friends I was supposed to meet. Main course: Green beans were drowned in butter. Onions and mushrooms I substituted from mashed potato had a decent taste but, again drowned in butter. Strip steak requested medium rare. Served cool rare. As a result, the edges were too tough to cut with steak knife (provided upon request.) Didn't eat much of it. I would not return for a single item that I experienced. Photos taken at conclusion of meal. $88.74 price ($20 drink) before tip was lower than expected for a premier hotel restaurant with a named chef. But, four times the quality of my experience. Although windows were dirty, the view was nice. So...
