Hibachi Express — Restaurant in Virginia

First time going since opening. Very impressed.

Given the area, I expected much less, but the interior is pretty fantastic. Elegant and impeccably clean given it's a take out joint.

I went big today, got a squid bento, shumai, and dragon roll. Not a thing I didn't fully enjoy.

Honestly the rice was a stand out because it was just plain old white rice pan fried in butter/oil, idk which, and no seasoning so it doesn't throw off the main dish. Which squid being fairly light itself is easy to overpower. This bento you could actually taste the squid with the rice.

Bento comes with 4 pieces of california roll, which were on par with any other place with decent sushi options, a spring roll, which was a fairly generic spring roll but stuffed with veggies, and a 'California salad', which appears to be ginger and orange zest? Some kind of citrus action going on there with the ginger dressing, but it was fantastic.

The shumai I could barely refrain from powering through all 8 pieces right off the bat. The shumai is hands down the best I've had since I've been in Hampton Roads. Just amazing.

And lastly the dragon roll. Now I LOVE eel sashimi, and unagi/dragon rolls are definitely a staple when i get sushi. This did not disappoint.

I really can't find anything bad to say Hibachi Express. The staff was friendly, the place is incredibly clean and modern, you can watch them prep your food start to finish if you want.

I think the ONLY thing is the location, since currently the construction on Jefferson is a bother.

For take out, this is probably the best I've been to. This place, quality wise, would be on par with many dine in only...

Terrible customer service. This was my first time going alone to order some fried rice it served with all the meals I had a friend order food from here last week and she ordered me just a box of fried rice that came with vegetables, eggs, and onions. today I decided to go back (for the first time) to just get a box of rice, and when I got back to work, I had just a plain container of rice I call to ask questions about why there were no added, vegetables eggs and no onions. I was hung up on three times trying to ask why it was made like that when I had someone order me the same thing a week ago (which they didn’t know) I’m ordering today and they were argumentative I had to leave my place if employment to go all the way back there with a officer because they were so aggressive and argumentative instead of adding what they NORMALLY PUT IN THE RICE I ENDED UP i ended up getting a refund. Didn’t even get to enjoy my lunch today because of this HUGE INCONVENIENCE all because I had questions about why they were missing eggs, onions...

when they opened it was very good but it's gradually gone downhill and the service is awful. I've refrained from giving a negative review trying to give them a chance to redeem themselves but today was the third and final straw i ordered chicken katsu only to discover they don't have katsu sauce the main component of the dish. when I asked about it I was looked at like I was crazy for expecting to have the sauce that is the namesake of the dish. I was given white sauce instead which is no where comparable. my salad was completely dry and all the dressing was poured on top of my sushi. prior to this I was charged extra for asking for no rice without being advised when I ordered this was randomly done after not being charged. the second strike was a worm in my kani salad I ended up throwing all the food out because I was too tired to put my daughter back in the car and drive back this place is only a minute or two away from my house but I'll gladly drive further to get food and service...
