So I try the place based on it's proximity to work and it's rating on Google Maps. I order a double cheeseburger, chili-cheese fries, and a vanilla shake. No shake; machine is down. Okay, no problem.
I didn't get the vibe that anyone working inside was particularly happy to be there. They weren't hostile, they just weren't real friendly. It felt like me ordering was an imposition on their time.
There more people inside than out when I arrived (this is a stand, not a restaurant). Maybe three orders before me. Yet I still waited nearly ten full minutes for my order, which considering the low volume (it was 1:45 in the afternoon, so after the lunch crowd) I thought was a bit excessive.
So I finally get my meal, take it to my vehicle (no picnic tables!?), and open 'er up. The chili cheese 'fries' are this insipid, luke warm mass of moist potato substance with chili and cheese sauces on top. I'm in the foodservice business and I can tell you that these fries were not fresh, were probably cooked at too low a temperature, then sat around awhile, and were packaged incorrectly (Packaging is the owners' fault; you don't put hot fries in a sealed container - especially if you're putting hot, moist sauces on top of them).
So after the disappointing 'fries' I was REALLY not looking forward to my burger. I thought it'd be two overcooked, over-pressed patties on a stale bun if the fry treatment was any indication. I was pleasantly surprised with a nice juicy offering made just the way I asked for it (lettuce, onions, mustard). The onions were diced and reasonably fresh so they still had bite to them, the lettuce I don't remember so I guess it made no impression on me, and just the right amount of mustard. The bun too was fresh and delicious. My only critique is maybe put some salt and pepper on the patties.
All in all, not too bad. In their defense I can't say what the plain fries with no sauce are like, but the chili cheese offering is insulting. Definitely come for the burgers, but I can't...
Read moreI've been hitting the Burger Barn since I was a kid in the 70s! The food is not good for you. There are pitfalls aplenty: plenty of pork; plenty of grease, plenty of salt, fat, sugar and calories. This is not the place you hit when you are feeling health-concious! They have got a sandwich there called 'Hogzilla' which I have not tried. Haven't gotten up the nerve. The components of it give me pause.
The soft-serve sundaes are inexpensive, but decadent. This is a no-frills, backwoods, local favorite. Workers come for lunch every day. Parents treat their kids to ice cream and burgers. Old cats come for a hot dog and a Pepsi. If you find yourself heading through Warren County on your way to someplace like Roanoake Rapids, it's worth the side trip off of Highway 158 to indulge yourself.
So I left out that the food is delish and the...
Read moreI am a septuagenarian that has been patronizing the BB since I a child and the building was on Main Street. The Hardy Hot Dogs were $0.25 back then. Well, I am a pork chop sandwich freak of the highest order. I always order two or more. There have been times I would drive more than 3 hours just outside the District of Columbia just to purchase them with excitement. The hotdogs are great. My only recommendation is that the pork chops be fully thawed before cooking. I have learned that cooking frozen meat leaves it tough. Sure wish they would sale BBQ sandwiches again; they were excellent!!! Otherwise, I highly recommend...
