THE 202 TAVERN — Restaurant in Washington

Wow. So disappointing. Remember this place from a few years back and thought it would be a good place for lunch on my way back from New Milford. The parking lot was full of cars, made me think this place must be really good. The food on the menu looked fantastic, once I turned the flashlight on my phone on. The print was soooo small it was very difficult to read if you were at an inside table. Ordered two hamburgers and a chicken club, and a cup of coffee. Coffee came out fairly quick but was lukewarm. The wait for our food was quite a long time and when it got there the fries were not hot or even warm. No place settings, napkins or salt and pepper. No offer for coffee or water refill. Trying to get service entailed helping ourselves (napkins) and seeking out our server. Replacement fries seemed to be double cooked and sweet potato fries had too much oil on them. When I ordered my chicken club sandwich at the suggestion of our server I asked if I could have American cheese instead of Swiss. I was told “sure no problem.” When the bill came, they charged me a dollar premium for replacing the Swiss with American. This made my sandwich the same price as the half pound juicy hamburgers. Comparing my thin sliced chicken ( two to three ounces, maybe one strip of bacon and a stale roll.). Last straw, thus this bad review. I understand someone not showing up, short staff, etc. I just don’t understand how this situation would happen these days with so few dining dollars out there. Be driving on by...

I just had the absolute best smoked chicken, BBQ, and sides that I’ve had in recent memory.

The smoked chicken was perfectly cooked, moist and juicy inside, crispy skin and wonderful smoky taste. It was also piping hot, as were the amazing baked beans. The slaw was also perfect - not too much mayonnaise , and a light and tasty flavor (I would have added a bit more vinegar) and seasoning - but fresh and really good.

We sat in the bar area, and the customers were happy, friendly, and all enjoying their meals. Our bartender also served as our waiter, and he was extremely friendly, and made certain that we were taken care of and got our food out very quickly and efficiently. He also was very attentive, checked on us several times, and could not have been more pleasant.

Overall - I think I’ve found a new “go to” in the area. This is a place that I could dine in every night. Not pretentious, laid back, friendly, casual, and just flat out exceptional food. This tavern would be great to meet friends, take family, or just stop and have a drink at the bar and a snack.

Tavern 202 also has a great covered outdoor space , and a more private / quiet dining room away from the bar (which was not noisy and overcrowded).

I strongly encourage folks to give this place a try. I’ve driven by many times and never stopped because I thought it was a roadhouse / biker bar / tavern - which is sort of is - but it also has a well crafted menu and a really enticing happy hour menus during the week - which I’m going to check...
