Another one of our "old reliables" has bit the dust. On November 11, 2023 we went to the White Horse to celebrate my wife's birthday. We had five adults and two children in our party (the rest had taken ill, so we were three less than the reservation).
The joint was jumping and maybe that contributed to the less than satisfactory experience. Now. please bear in mind that we have been to the White Horse numerous times and enjoyed ourselves and found the meals to be very good.
Not this day!
No one had anything fancy. There were a couple, of paninis, another sandwich type entry, and two orders of fish and chips. One kid had a grilled cheese sandwich and, the other, a quesadilla. We had three appetizers and desert. My grandchildren had the most expensive scoops of ice cream in Connecticut ($7.50 a scoop) and my "key lime pie" was inedible. I think the pie must not be a big seller (maybe that's why it was not as good as a pastry chef [as advertised on the desert menu] could have made). Nothing was available for a birthday celebration, though they did put a candle in my wife's desert.
Jen the waitress was okay and attentive when flagged down. It wasn't until later that my wife mentioned she never could get her water glass recharged. Jen did forget a few things (remember, it was a busy Saturday) and did remember to bring them after awhile. Jen was tipped 20%, mostly because I'm generous; so I don't want you to think that we took our lackluster experience out on her.
The problem could not be a lack of staff, because there was Jen, two people who ported out the meals and bussed the table and a couple of young wait staff who looked really bored and stood in the alcove of the "Lions Room (?)" when they could have been helping make guests feel more welcomed and appreciated (you know, by, let's say, refilling water glasses).
Anyway, when I queried my family a few days later about their meals, everyone had the same opinion: Good, but not worth the money. I guess we all...
Read moreI honestly was super disappointed at the service I received. I’ve worked as a host at a restaurant before- I know how a rush can be, but to be spoken to the way I was, truly disappointing. This past week it was my parents 50th wedding anniversary. I knew they were heading here for lunch around 130. I called at about 140 to see what my options were for being able to pay. The first time I asked, the hostess said “let me ask, please hold”…. 10 minutes later she never returned. I hung up and called again. I think a different host answered. I asked her my request… her response was “we can only do that if you buy a gift card and put it towards the meal” … fine, I understand card over the phone for a bill can be complicated. She then asks me what the reservation was under. I was not sure what time or what name, I live out of state and this was a suprise. She was getting increasingly frustrated with me. I understand, they sounded busy. I said- my parents look distinct and I know what they’re wearing (my mom sent me pictures) and finally she goes “we are WAY to busy to go searching for your parents by description”… just her tone was so rude. AGAIN, I get it. All she had to say was “at this moment we are really busy to carry this out, can I call you back” or can we do this another time whatever. She did not have to be so rude. At that, I said never mind and hung up. My parents never got to have their meal paid for by me, I ended up having to do it for their dinner. I just think that FOH should be trained alittle better on how to remain polite even when they’re busy. It’s...
Read moreWent here after checking out the Hidden Valley Preserve: We were hungry! Covid-19 measures are in place; they do really well with all servers/hosts wearing masks. Like many other places you have to call ahead for a reservation! Tables outside definitely seemed at least 6 feet apart; unlike some other places we've been! The patio outside is "riverside" and charming! The food: Burgers, while noted should be ordered medium on the menu, and we ordered medium: Came well done. However, they were still very tasty! They were also able to amend my order to be placed on a house salad instead of a bun! Service: Awesome! When notifying our server of the "well done" burgers, he immediately sought to make it right. We just wanted to provide feedback; as we were starving, the burgers were tasty, and we had already eaten quite a few bites. He offered to have them re-made; which we declined, as again we had already eaten quite a bit! He then asked if he could comp our second round of drinks! We were really impressed with his service skills (I regret that I forgot his name or I'd inform the owner)! He was also very attentive to check in, offer drink refills, and clear plates. The drinks; they have a good selection of beer. My tito's with seltzer and lime was pretty weak though. The Cost: Excellent! We're used to $14+ dollar burgers and $10 plus drinks. For 2 drinks and 2 huge burgers the cost came to just under $40. Overall; this was a great place to come for a quick post hike bite. We will definitely return if we're in...
