My family and I were down for the fund raising Rest Haven Halloween Cemetery tour for the 4th straight year put on by the Washington/Wilkes Historical Society. We try to eat somewhere new every trip and this year had discovered the Washington Tavern online. The history of the place being one of the first building and business built after the American victory of the Revolutionary War. The first owner was one of Georgia first war heroes, Brigader General Elijah Clarke, who received huge land grants from congress in appreciation of war services and defeating the pro British Tories at the nearby Battle of Kettle Creek along with South Carolina hero General Andrew Pickens, and the unfortunate Colonel John Dooley who was executed in his home by another band of Tories after Kettle Creek. Clarke built a Tavern on lot#1 (this same spot) of the newly founded and layed out City of Washington, the first American city named in honor of George Washington. Needless to say, a lot of American history transpired on this plot of land, and in the history and development of the new state of Georgia. During the years he owned the Tavern, Clarke was commanding the Georgia State Milita fighting off Spanish invasion from Florida, and hostile Native American tribes nearby while policing countless new homesteaders coming into the newly acquired lands following the Revolution. Plus keeping those loyal that served the United States from exacting revenge and punishment on pro British Tories who didn't flee with others loyal subjects to the crown. Long story short, the staff was great. The owner/bartender even changed the channel on the one of several TVs, and the exact one he was watching so my rabid Georgia Tech fan wife and daughter could watch Georgia Tech play Notre Dame while they ate. My daughters boyfriend and I are Bulldogs fans but luckily there game against Texas was later. My wife ordered the Fried Green Tomato/BLT sandwich with onion rings, and loved it ! My daughter, who's finicky, wanted the Chicken strip basket with onion rings. Also very good ! Myself and my daughters boyfriend ordered the Smash Burgers with onion rings......magnificent !! Sadly, we don't make it down but once a year for the fund raiser, but may have to venture the 2 hour trip down for a Saturday afternoon meal more often. The wait staff was very attentive and constantly asking if we needed anything and engaging in conversation. Most places you have to find the server and let them know you need something, and then they are more concerned with their phone,ect....NOT HERE ! IT'S OLD SCHOOL SERVICE AND IT'S GREAT !! I definitely recommend this to anyone around Grand Old Towne Washington Georgia. Also check out Kettle Creek Revolutionary War battlefield, Robert Toombs House, and the Washington Wilkes Museum nearby if your looking for a...
Read moreCame here based on family recommendation. They were right-not much else for 30 miles so it’s the only place they could recommend because it was the only place they found within a 45 min drive of their location.
First off, Washington is in the middle of the GA grasslands, especially if you are camping at AH Stephens state park, which although the park is right next to I20, is even more remote. It’s a 30 drive between the 2 places.
This is a bar that serves bar food. Wings are ok, redeemed by original sauces like PB&J and bourbon bacon. They were crispy but wings like this can be found anywhere. Ok but not great enough to come back again.
It was 94 degrees outside and all the ac vents seemed pointed at the bar. 2 stars for atmosphere. Needless to say, we ate and got out of there as soon as we could.
Waitress apologized because they were out of 2 common sides-how hard is it to run to Ingles market for cabbage for coleslaw? Ingles is 5 minutes away. But she was attentive to our table., bringing refills for beverages and water.
Tap beer was happy hour priced at $3. But no break on glasses of wine.
If you get stranded in the area, try this place but don’t expect anything special. It a bar that...
Read moreMy husband and I were staying overnight in Washington and were looking for a place to have a drink and good food. The first place we stopped at had an open sign and Google said they were open but the place was blacked out at 630pm on a Saturday. We decided to drive around and saw several cars full of people entering a little building with a red door so I looked the place up noticed it was right up our alley so we went in. Our server was awesome! She was cute as a button, and so polite. She was very attentive and made sure we were happy with everything. The other waitress was very attentive too. The food was awesome. We ordered the fried pickles and they were so darn good we ate them all and did have room for our smash burgers. We also got wings to go and they were tasty also. The menu is limited, but don't let that stop you from trying them out. Their margaritas were yummy also. I recommend this place and so does my husband, we will definitely be back. We are willing to drive the 45 minutes just...
