El Portal Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Waverly

Enjoyed the dining experience very much. The staff were bilingual, looked professional, were knowledgeable, fast and always friendly. Dining area was kept clean with tables bussed and turned over quickly. Portion sizes overall were appropriate to the price, lunch being a good value. Seating was almost totally full and drive through was consistently busy.

The fajitas were excellent. Ordered horchata and it had coconut flavoring in it and I'm allergic so I didn't drink it, wasted over $3. Asked if it was Piña Colada on accident and was told no. Salsa was too watery and flat on flavor, I tasted only tomato. I added some salt and a few shakes of the tabletop Tapatio to help heat it up to my liking, also the rice was bland. The beans were delicious as well as the tostada. Only issue with the tostada was that it had beans under it so it stuck to the plate and got soggy, couldn't pick it up to eat it.

I'm being very honest in my review because I understand the importance of this and the obvious professionalism of the family that owns it. I will certainly continue enjoying future dining experiences at El Portal and wish everyone there...

We noticed there was a new Mexican restaurant in town a few days ago and knew we had to try it out! We showed up early around 4:30 so it wasn't too busy when we got there. Their menu is HUGE so it took us a little bit to all decide what we wanted.

We ordered our food and it was at our table 5 minutes later! The chips and salsa were both very good, the kids had the first bowl of chips gone within minutes and they were very quick to refill it.

Our food was excellent, everyone really enjoyed what they had!

I can't remember our waitresses name, but she was fantastic, so nice and helped answer all of our questions! Our drinks were refilled even before they needed to be!

Extremely mediocre food. I am surprised no other reviews mention the ridiculous amount of sanitizer still left in the cups. All drinks/water tastes like sanitizer from the dish sink. They need to rinse/wash cups after dishwasher or turn down the concentration of detergent. Won't be back for this reason alone as it is detrimental to health when consumed. Straight up awful. Salsa is a cup of water, not hearty at all. Beans are canned and nasty. Food is again, very mediocre compared to every other restaurant of this style. Service is great, people are friendly and nice.
