Recently dined at Sully's for Sunday lunch. My Dad drove up from SW IA about 2 hours away to enjoy a Guinness and something good to eat. The day was nice, so we enjoyed al fresco seating.
Bad news though... They were out of Guinness. I do try to understand these things, as we all run out of brown sugar from time to time and need to run over to the neighbor's house. But, if you're going to advertise on pouring Guinness like water flowing from an endless stream, you better actually have it. That was a bummer. Big time.
But, we let that go. The server was a hard working miss and seemed to be really hustling. I got the sense they were short staffed, but I didn't ask. We ordered lunch, and things slid sideways from there. Our entrees were delivered spaced out over the course of OVER AN HOUR. So for our party of 9 some ate starting around 1pm and the rest about 2:10...
And the last dish to arrive was a salad. Explain that. The cooks were either asleep at the wheel or just plain absent. The battered burger was a soggy mess and for a bread guy like myself it had too much breading to consider very edible. The cheese curds were fantastic, fries ok, and the draft beer nearly warm.
Again, the server worked her tail off. I sensed she was making the best of a lousy staff situation.
But to be honest, there are so many "Irish" pubs around the DSM area, there's no reason to come back here again. Below average food, no flagship beer, and a kitchen staff that simply doesn't cut it.
Don't...
Read moreOur goal to visit every restaurant in the Des Moines Metro continues. We went here to see the Hawkeye game.
We walked in and we found a table with social distancing with a great view of the game. We quickly realized it was more bar than restaurant, but we wanted to watch the game.
There menu is simple but they proudly boast that they don't serve anything Frozen. We asked for a cocktail menu but they had none. I think an Irish whiskey cocktail menu would help with sales.
One thing about a small menu is that they have masteres what is on it. Somtimes these arw the best and we weren't disappointed.
We ordered the Irish Nachoes with fries. The presentation was amazing. We atw what we could and we both wanted to eat it all but we were full. Blame it on old age.
Waitresses were all over it and we enjoyed the enthusiastic Iowa crowd. One thing we didn't like is it seems it caters to regulars. Now we arrived there at the beginning of the second quarter and they had given out tickets for drawings. Never were explained how to get tickets. So we felt left out.
We looked around and saw some good things. A place for you to relax with your dogs and an outdoor patio with 📺.
We will probably choose the patio next time, though the energy in the bar was amazing.
Now for you sensitive people you may find the bathroom signs offensive. We found them cute with great bar humor.
We will come back. We had a great time and enjoyed our afternoon watching...
Read moreWent in on Friday. Thought we were getting the 12 dollar special for the paddy melt. I added fries (menu say it is an additional 2 dollars) so I was assuming it would come out to 14 dollars for the special with fries. Check comes. Charged full price (15 dollars + $2 equaling $17). I ask about it, and because I ordered fries the special no longer counts… never was told this by the server or anyone. So basically instead of paying $2 extra for fries, I paid $5 up charge for fries instead of chips. So me and my girlfriend basically spent 10 extra dollars on or sides alone. If we would have known that upgrading the sides would invalidate the special we would have just got chips. Wish instead of scamming the guest the waitress would have let us know before we ordered 👌🏻 I don’t understand how changing the side makes the special invalid. Why would it just not be 2 dollars on top of the special price? It makes no sense to pay 5 dollars to substitute fries because it’s a Friday. As a cherry on top it took 1.5 hours to...
