My wife and I have driven by Martha's for years, traveling between Richmond and Gloucester. We finally had an opportunity to stop for dinner this past Sunday evening around 7pm. The parking lot was almost empty which had us a little concerned although many people visit earlier on Sundays for dinner. We entered thru the side door and were still a little concerned as it was empty with formica-topped tables looking very neglected. As we made our way into the front hallway, we were greeted by Meghan who looked very tired but she still greeted us with a smile. She led us to the back room where several other couples were eating and it was a very appealing room - continuous windows around, nice dining tables and cloth napkins. As it turns out, Meghan was the full staff for the day - hostess, waitress, bar tender and busser. Despite being the only staff, besides the cook, she was cheery, very personable and very professional at all tasks. Our cocktails were excellent (not included in our cost/person) but the best was yet to come. We had the fried chicken and meatloaf (they were out of the trout) which was superb, the collards were terrific and the smashed potatoes/gravy were perfect. I'm not a huge fan of mac 'n' cheese but it was the best I've ever had - prepared to order. Fortunately, we were able to tell the chef, in person, how much we enjoyed everything as I believe we were the last patrons of the night. Obviously, we can't attest to everything else on the menu but we will, definitely, be stopping there again to try the other menu items. We recommend that everyone make sure to include Martha's in your plans for dining out and we recommend to the owner that you really try to hire additional help - tough these days. Meghan & Brandon are invaluable but will burn out if they are overworked - just our observation. Thanks to those two, we...

We’ve patronized Martha’s Kitchen since they opened a few years ago and generally enjoy coming here. The food is delicious and keeps us coming back, so we’re used to overlooking the slow service or occasionally miscalculated bill. Usually if we come during off-hours we avoid these things and have a pleasant experience. However, we’ve been wanting to try breakfast/brunch for a while and figured that making a reservation for New Year’s Eve would be a safe bet. We arrived at our reservation time (10 am) and found a crowd of people waiting to be seated and a hostess who was clearly overwhelmed. Right off the bat, she repeatedly said she was the only one there and that a coworker should arrive shortly. We were eventually brought to a table but never sat down because by the time the hostess brought us a high chair (which we specified needing when we made the reservation), we realized it was broken. My husband waited a few minutes at the hostess stand to ask for another one, but the hostess shouted from the kitchen that she didn’t have any other high chairs. Then she told him to wait a minute and by the time she came back only to repeat that she didn’t have any other high chairs, we had decided to leave. The hostess seemed surprised by our choice, followed us as we left, and again said her coworker was supposed to be there soon. I’m not sure why she mentioned that yet again like it was going to keep us there. Was the coworker bringing functional high chairs? Or maybe the coworker was a ringmaster who could handle the circus inside? Regardless, we were extremely disappointed and likely will take a break from visiting...

Well isn't this just the cutest little place. The decore was wonderful and the Christmas theme in the bar is amazing. Everything was tastefully decorated for the holidays. We did not make reservations and just showed up there at 6:00 p.m. and there seemed to be a pretty good rush of people coming in. I would recommend making a reservation. Even though we didn't have one, for our party of four, we were quickly seated at a nice table. Are greeter was also our server. There were only two servers this evening but they did really well keeping up with everything. We ordered the fried green tomatoes and fried oysters as appetizers. The oysters were a little bit overdone but still had great flavor. The sriracha sauce with the fried green tomatoes was excellent. Got the honey fried Chicken which was very tender and juicy along with three sides. All things were hand prepared as ordered. Everything came out hot and ready to eat. I do not understand why a lot of people seem to be leaving reviews for no flavor or seasoning because ours was seasoned well and had excellent flavor. The Ritz cracker covered trout was excellent. My wife had the beef stew which quickly disappeared from her plate because it was so delicious. And our last plate was the fried pork chops. They were juicy as well and very flavorful. If you're in the area and need a little ambience as well as some really good Southern cooking this is...

Stopped in for lunch and had a great experience with fantastic service. Our server had a wonderful personality. I ordered the fried chicken with honey, succotash, collard greens, cheese grits, and fried okra. We started with crab bites and pork rinds. My workmate had the meatloaf with cornbread and collard greens. The crab cake bites were large and tasty, with four big pieces perfect for sharing. The pork rinds arrived sizzling and could easily serve four people. My only suggestion for the pork rinds would be to offer a choice of dry seasoning. The fried chicken included two well-battered and nicely cooked chicken breasts. The honey added a subtle sweetness that paired well with hot sauce. The collard greens were excellent, and the fried okra, which seemed to be battered in-house, was delicious. Unfortunately, the cheese grits were dry and sticky, and the succotash was bland. My workmate also enjoyed the collard greens and found the cornbread good but thought the meatloaf was just average. He mentioned he would try something else on a future visit. Overall, it's a nice restaurant in a rural area, and I would return if I were in the area again.

Drove up here from Yorktown to try it out. Our waitress was great! Always present and offering to do anything for us...and did it with a smile! We got here at 9:45 am and there were only 2 other couples in the entire restaurant. I ordered George's Breakfast and my wife ordered Grits and toast. It took almost 25 minutes to get served. My food arrived with a big chip out of the plate. My eggs were cooked over easy as requested, but they had either onion or garlic salt added to them. They were terrible. The bacon was probably cooked earlier this morning and were cooked in the fryer so they were all balled together. The potatoes were cool and again had probably been cooked in the fryer a while ago. The biscuit was nice and tasty, but couldn't make up for the rest. My wife's grits had the same onion or garlic salt added to them...she couldn't eat them. The coffee and the atmosphere was nice, with the exception of the music blaring from the kitchen...every time the door opened, you couldn't here your own discussion. Suggest turning it down. I had high hopes since I drove so far to get there, but will not be giving it another try.
