Grandma Vera's Cafe & Bakery — Restaurant in West Terre Haute

Just awful, we ordered breakfast. I started to eat the toast along with drinking my coffee I thought that maybe the butter was sour and taking a closer look at the toast there was mold on the toast. That there was enough to destroy my appetite, it literally takes two seconds to look at that bread before you put it in toaster and the eggs didn't smell right. I was pretty much done. The server saw the bread and saw the mold but the cook tells the waitress "the other breads don't have mold". No apologies, nothing and nada. Well I sure didn't put the mold on the bread so I still wonder how many other people might've eaten that moldy bread and had no idea and those eggs. I definitely didn't touch anything and just couldn't get out of there quick enough. My guests were quite disappointed and my friend paid the check even the plate that I didn't touch. Went for the first time today. Hot food was good and is the 3 star review. The piece that drew me in was the talk of their pies and rolls.

The rolls were hard and the dough was overworked. They grossly overtasted like a rising agent. We asked for specific heating instructions for when we got home and followed them exactly as told.

The pies were the worst though. We got 3 slices- cherry, chocolate cream, and coconut meringue. The crumb part of the cherry was so salty that it seeped into the filling making it inedible. The chocolate cream had a meringue topping that was anything but light and fluffy. It actually fell off the chocolate creme like a brick.

I'm hoping with all the positive talk that it was just a really, really off day. The staff was friendly and the place was clean. May try again down the road but it will definitely take a while to get over the bad tastes of...

This is the perfect little hometown cafe! In my personal opinion this is the closest you can get to grandma's homemade biscuits and gravy! The gravy and the fluffy biscuits are the best I've had and dare I say better than my grandma's. I love the atmosphere and when you sit down to eat you really feel at home in this small family cafe!
