BurritoDumpling were passing through and saw this spot. Always looking interested in butcher shops, we decided to stop in. This is far from a butcher shop which is why it is given 2* and not more. It is basically a general store / deli sandwich shop. They have some pre-packaged meat but nothing that is even remotely like a butcher shop. Didn’t have anything from the sandwich counter (don’t think I would even call it a deli counter) but thought it was cute and the deserts looked decent and the sandwiches looked well portioned.
Your Burrito edits to add, I have previously worked at a butcher shop many moons ago, and unless they are cutting, processing, and storing meat somewhere in the back, this is not it. My expectation in a place that calls itself a butcher shop is a meat counter with with raw meat, not packaged, behind display case glass, and some person to get me however many pounds I want or whichever steaks I choose. I want to see them bloody and raw, laying out there in all their meaty glory. This was literally a few steaks, prepackaged and vacuum sealed laying in an open refrigerator. There was no butcher anywhere in sight while we were there. The counter girl was young and probably someone’s daughter. She was lovely and had an absolutely winning personality. It was nice to see that kind of work ethic in someone so young. However, this remains what I would categorize as a general store or sandwich shop, which there is absolutely nothing wrong with. The signage is just slightly misleading, and expectations based on that are not reality when...
Read moreMy husband and I decided to take the scenic route home today and stopped in when we saw cars in the parking lot. So happy they’re open and that the location is being put to good use. They’ve just opened their sandwich counter and the first thing I noticed was how good it smelled inside. They offer a good selection of interesting meats in their freezer cabinet as well as a variety of sausages and more in their refrigerator. They offered whole ribeyes for $20lb which is so reasonable and a great choice for Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner. There were lots of interesting honeys, maple syrups and other shelf items including some sweets lining the shelves and a few root vegetables on display, perfect if you pick up something to roast. We left with a whole rabbit to roast which I haven’t been able to find in stores in VA. One thing I loved about our visit was meeting the family. The owner was very welcoming and hospitable and it was great to see his wife and two daughters behind the counter helping customers with warmth. My family also owns a business so it means a lot to see young’ins learning a skill and participating in the legacy. When you shop local you aren’t just helping your local economy, you’re supporting your neighbors. You don’t have to make big purchases every visit to make an impact on small business. Try it yourself, tell your friends and leave a good review and come back when you can. These are the ways you impact small business. Great job guys, looking forward to shopping here...
Read moreplease check their Facebook page/call before driving if you live a good distance away. They do close early sometimes if there is not any customers for a while.
I will gladly drive the 45 min again to get one of their sandwiches. They were fresh and well worth the price. They pile the meat on so thick and each bite is full of deliciousness. It will likely take me several days to finish it. We ordered two Italians and when I picked up the bag it had to have weighed over 5 pounds!! Everything tasted fresh. I have been craving a sandwich compared to a mom and pop shop up in Maine I grew up on...something about the bread just completed the sandwiches. Meats of Virginia are the closest I've found and I'm in love! Very happy we decided to ride out on a whim and try it out thanks to a friend's raving review on Facebook.
My only negative, which did not impact my rating due to their superior customer service, is that they shut down early sometimes. I completely understand the business standpoint, but for customers it is disappointing. We traveled a good ways and upon arrival they were locked up. Luckily, they were still inside cleaning up and answered when I called. They let us right on in and served us. They said they post on Facebook when they close early, but I had been driving and unable to see the post. My recommendation would be to put something on the website that states they sometimes close early and to call ahead before making a trip out.
100% going back and will be...
