This was the worst experience I've had in a long time.
After reading this restaurant was rated the second best in Indiana, we decided to give it a try. A mistake we won't make again.
We were seated quickly but it took 20 minutes for them to take our drink order. Another twenty for our app order. At the 1 hour mark, we finally received our apps. This was the best thing about our time there. The pretzel nuggets were delicious. The salsa and queso were good but very runny. (I suspect they're watering it down.)
Now on to the meals; two of us ordered burgers (a double and a whiskey burger) with wedges. One ordered a salad, and the last ordered the stuffed meatloaf. 3/4 of us hardly ate out meals. And the 4th didn't eat their wedges.
What could be so wrong, you ask?
I'll break it down by meal:
The salad was full of hard pieces that should had been thrown out. The tomatoes tasted like they were on the verge on going bad. Extremely watery, basically only good for cooking. The cucumbers... there was something off about them. Possibly improperly stored. And the croutons were absolutely disgusting. At first, they tasted like nothing but then you're hit with a plasticy after taste that doesn't leave.
Now for the burgers: Both came burnt. I'm not talking a little charred, I'm talking BURNT. So burnt that when you peeled the burnt part off, half the patty was missing. Each ordered wedges; one with garlic parmasean added. Both were burnt, hard, nearly impossible to eat. The garlic parm ones were missing the garlic. The plain ones were so salty, you'd think they came from McDonald's. Neither were eaten.
Lastly, the stuffed meatloaf. It was undercooked, enough that we could see it under the dim lighting. (Their reply says it was the ham. It wasn't.)
One more thing to add is that two people also got baked potatoes. Both were extremely dark (just like the wedges.) My opinion is that they may have a heat lamp food sits under forever until it's served. (Again, their reply says they weren't, yet the potatoes were nearly black. Unless they are using some kind of new black potato, these were definitely cooked or heated too long.)
Our orders were over $90. We spent over two hours there, mostly just waiting. Its extremely loud and you can hardly hear your table speak (the tables are packed together so you'll hear the four adjacent tables.) This could be forgiven if the food was good, but it wasnt.
My advice would be to skip this place. Or only get apps. Maybe it was a bad night (the waitresses were certainly running around like crazy; ours was obviously grumpy) but it certainly wasn't worth our money.
[We eat at a newrestaurant weekly and I can say this is the worst we've been...
Read moreNot being local to the area, it was a complete surprise to find this establishment while planning the dining activities for a day in the Remington area.
Roots is not like most eateries you find in small town Indiana and it's immediately apparent there are aspirations for big things to come upon taking a seat and laying eyes on your surroundings and the diverse menu.
Nick was exceptional in his attentiveness and well-honed dining service skills. He provided several menu recommendations which may have actually made my decision all the more difficult but not in the bad way.
Ultimately, I settled on Fried Pickles (a must whenever I find this on the menu), 9oz Sirloin, Yukon Mash, and Green Beans with Bacon. I usually prefer my fried pickles with a bit more batter and crispiness but they were still delicious and I never realized I liked them with sweet n sour dipping sauce until it arrived alongside. The steak (medium) was on point and had a nice crust on the outside while still being very tender and juicy. I will say I'm not a big fan of green beans prepared in the fryer or sauteed but I knew it up front and ordered them anyway (because who doesn't like bacon 🥓). The Yukon mashed potatoes were rich, buttery, and smooth with the texture of some soft bits to highlight they are made from scratch.
I am so very glad to have come across the hidden gem that is Roots and hope to find myself in the area again for another fantastic...
Read moreJust visited this place. We haven't been here in a couple of years. I wasn't happy to with the quality of the food when they first opened. I have seen many good reviews so we decided to try it again. The atmosphere due to the architecture is loud and booming. We could not even hear each other talking across the table . The restaurant used to have the most outstanding blue cheese dressing. I actually bought a gallon from them, it was so good. Not anymore. I ordered the pork medallions. The menu stated it was pork tenderloin. It was not. They were gristly, like pork chops and were way overcooked, dry and about two inches in diameter. Three only, so small and dry they were a joke. The lemon pepper rice had no lemon and no pepper and were presented cold. They did bring me a steaming bowl to replace them but they still lacked the lemon and the pepper. The steamed broccoli was room temperature. I ordered grilled onions and mushrooms to go on top of them and did not receive them . However, my husband ordered the 12 oz ribeye and it was cooked to perfection. This was the only redeeming factor. I do not believe we will be back. Oh, we just left and the Right side of the double doors was locked. Only the left one opened. I believe that is an Indiana code fire law violation. If it's not it...
