I have now been here a few times. For those interested in more methodical reviews:
Drinks: Drip coffee is slightly above average. Espresso is moderately above average, and I presume that extends to the drinks made from it (it did the Americano at least). Both are competitive with other offerings in the region, I would say its the best normal coffee in a few blocks at least, though the advantage is slim.
Tea is available, and they put more effort in the the standard tea bags you see in 99% of places. Its done in the classic Russian/Turkish style, strong and bitter but refreshing. Good for sipping if you are there awhile. It will take awhile to get most of the time, as there just isn't that much demand for tea these days so they will probably have to put on a new pot.
I, at least, got free refills on Drip Coffee and Tea while staying there, but its not an obviously displayed policy.
I know I saw a brush for matcha as well, and I know they are melting down chocolate for their mocha. I haven't tried them yet, but they clearly aren't taking any shortcuts.
Service is not generally fast, but is laid back and methodical. If you want to relax there, you will be delivered your drinks when they are done (obviously the drip coffee is near instant, being just a pot of regularly refreshed coffee). Time is put into getting just a bit extra quality, and they don't have the process down of a high-traffic barista to rush things too much.
Food: I haven't eaten their full selection, but the baked goods are usually solid and not overly sweet. Other customers seem to be enjoying some sandwich options enough to come back twice in a day, but I remain skeptical of their 10/10 ranking. The bagels are a solid normal option for breakfast, at least, and they are generous with a good quality cream cheese.
Atmosphere: The overall atmosphere is cozy. There is not much space, but it is rarely packed. The owner seems to enjoy people being there, which is a welcome change from many places that seem to wish you would move on if you aren't buying more.
The owner is putting a lot of time and effort into this, and is giving out decent results. There aren't a ton of places one can just 'be' for 6 hours, and until this gets quite a bit more popular I expect it to remain a fairly...
Read moreDaphne’s Tears is the kind of place that you didn’t know you needed until you get there. In these days of corporate everything, Daphne’s feels like coming home when you’ve been lonely for a while. While the physical environment could be spruced up with a few small additions to the decor, the warmth and enthusiasm of the owners and staff more than make up for the unadorned space. First and foremost: the coffee. If you’ve been reared on coffees sold at corporate chains, you will be delighted with the richness and depth of their many coffee offerings. Their coffees are reminiscent of what you would find in a charming European cafe, certainly not typical in Central Mass. While I have not yet had their sandwiches, I have had enough of their sweet offerings to recommend them with enthusiasm. As a cupcake aficionado, I can promise you that even the most ardent connoisseur of cupcakes will be craving them in between visits. The raspberry squares were moist and perfect for real raspberry lovers, not too sweet and reminiscent of freshly picked fruit. When I arrived for my third visit today, the owner greeted me warmly and explained politely that they we just about to close. I suggested that I return at another time. Instead, he encouraged me to place my order and he made me feel like my order was the most important order of the day, even though they were actually closed. He took the time to explain the available items, and in doing so, he seemed genuinely interested in engaging in conversation. Each time I have visited Daphne’s Tears Bakery and Cafe, I have noted their genuine commitment to serving great food and coffee as well as their sincere desire to warmly welcome their customers. This is indeed a winning combination, and I hope to return every time I am in Worcester. Once you’ve tried it, you will...
Read moreWe were excited to hear of a new coffee spot in Tatnuck - we stopped in this weekend during their second week open. Upon first impression, the layout and atmosphere left much to be desired, but the staff were welcoming and patient as we browsed the menu. We got a sausage, egg & cheese sandwich and avocado toast with bacon, both on everything bagels, as well as an iced Belgium chocolate mocha and an iced white chocolate mocha. Personally, the sausage and bacon were not my favorite (I prefer a ground sausage and crispy bacon!) and the bagels were a bit chewy - it wasn’t quite on par with what I was expecting for a breakfast sandwich. I also wish the avocado was freshly sliced - it was mashed and seemed like it may have been premade. The sandwich was initially missing the egg, but this was quickly corrected, and the staff even gave us a strawberry cupcake to thank us for our patience. Our mochas were decent (I preferred the dark chocolate over the white) and the staff offered us to-go cups so we could take it with us on the walk home. The staff are all enthusiastic and very kind, I hope they do well in...
