We had high hopes for our Valentine’s Day dinner at The Hills Gastropub, but the overall experience was disappointing.
We arrived a couple of minutes before our 8 pm reservation and were promptly seated. Since it was a cold and windy night, the restaurant had moved its patio tables indoors. While we appreciated the effort, the execution wasn’t great—the room had bright lighting, no background music, and lacked any romantic ambiance. The only sounds were conversations from nearby tables, which made the space feel more like a conference room than a dining area.
We placed our drink orders, but our waiter seemed disorganized from the start. We requested water immediately, yet had to ask two more times before we finally received it. I ordered a lemon drop martini and an azalea, but both cocktails were bland and lacked flavor.
For appetizers, we ordered the charbroiled oysters, which were tasty and ended up being a necessity since we waited until 9:35 pm for our entrées. The long delay was frustrating, especially for a special occasion. Adding to the confusion, our waiter double-checked our order multiple times, each time reading it back incorrectly—though in the end, our food did arrive as ordered.
Since the restaurant closes at 10 pm, we barely had time to enjoy our meal before the kitchen started cleaning up for the night. To our surprise, the music they played during closing was reggaeton—not exactly what we expected for the atmosphere.
While the food was delicious, the slow service, lack of ambiance, and overall disorganization made for a disappointing Valentine’s dinner. I hope they improve their service and attention to detail...

She sat us right away. Not even 2 minutes passed, and her manager, in the middle of the dining throughway, in front of us, reprimanded her about how she is not allowed to seat people, if she checked for our reservation and that she needs to focus on her tables outside. Without making a scene, I pulled him in private and asked him if there was a problem with us sitting there and if she was okay. I think he got the hint. He definitely put my wife and other patrons on edge making the dining atmosphere less than desirable. The Hills is a very nice place to eat and drink and after 10 years in the bar and restaurant industry, where it can be high-stress, a manager needs to be able to do everything but not micro-manage his staff. Unsure of any preexisting issues, or lack of experience in his team. However, owners/managers are there to help relieve bottlenecks and support their staff in providing good customer service. If staff is lacking and not attending to customers, or filling ice or bussing tables, a manager needs to discretely and respectfully tell them what needs to be done.
Love the food, love the restaurant, but the bossman could use some discretion when...
Read moreThis is the 5th time I've dined here and I'm sure it won't be the last. The good: the waitress was great. The omelet had a tomato based ettoufee not like the one pictured but my husband enjoyed it. My son had a kids meal and it was a generous size. The Bad: the tables are maybe loose and wobble. I was being a glutton and ordered 2 entrees. I had the catfish and grits and the banana foster french toast. I can't recommend either. Im not sure that my fish was catfish. It looked more like a very small piece of tilapia. The grits were rough and needed to be cooked longer. Based on another review I think they attempted to make them better. They seemed to have added heavy whipping cream or some milk based on the taste. The texture tells me they're not cooking them long enough maybe. They definitely didn't grow up eating them like I did. Anyway the banana foster wasn't banana foster. It was plantains and syrup. Not ideal when people are expecting a caramelized syrup made with cinnamon sugar and butter.I only took a picture of the catfish because I was so shocked at the size. The prices are...
