Review: The Enchanting Blue Eye of Albania

Our journey through southern Albania brought us to one of the country’s most mesmerizing natural wonders: the "Blue Eye" (Albanian: Syri i Kaltër). Located in the village of Muzinë within the Finiq municipality, this captivating water spring is renowned for its stunningly clear blue waters that allow visibility to depths of over fifty meters. Despite divers descending to these depths, the actual depth of the karst hole remains a mystery.

The Blue Eye Experience

The Blue Eye is nestled within a protected area of 180 hectares, designated as a Natural Monument. This lush region, characterized by oak and sycamore trees, provides a serene backdrop for visitors. The spring serves as the source of the Bistricë River, which stretches 25 kilometers before emptying into the Ionian Sea south of Sarandë. With an altitude of 152 meters and an impressive discharge rate of 18,400 liters per second, the Blue Eye is a powerful and awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.

Accessibility and Scenic Route

To reach this hidden gem, we rented a small motorbike for 15 EUR and drove along the scenic Saranda-Gjirokaster road from the village of Krongj. The perfect streets made for an enjoyable ride, filled with anticipation as we neared the Blue Eye. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the sight of the vivid blue waters, surrounded by the vibrant green of the forest. The contrast was striking, and the tranquility of the location was a welcome respite from the bustling tourist spots we had visited earlier.

A Place of Resilience

The Blue Eye has faced challenges over the years, including a temporary dry spell in the summer of 2004 and a wildfire in 2017 that partially burnt the area. Despite these adversities, the site remains a testament to the resilience of nature and continues to attract visitors from around the world.

Our Visit

Our visit to the Blue Eye was nothing short of magical. It was very touristy from the start, but we embraced the vibrant energy of the place. After parking our motorbike, we eagerly jumped into the ice-cold water—a refreshing and exhilarating experience. We spent the day marveling at the clarity of the water, trying to peer into the depths of the spring, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The experience was a highlight of our trip, a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

Conclusion

If you find yourself in southern Albania, a trip to the Blue Eye is a must. This natural wonder not only offers breathtaking views but also a chance to connect with the serene beauty of the Albanian landscape. Whether you’re a nature lover, an adventurer, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, the Blue Eye will leave you with...

The Blue Eye in Sarandë is an absolute stunner and a must-visit sight for anyone venturing into Albania. I’d heard whispers of its beauty, but seeing it in person was something else entirely.

We were lucky enough to visit in early March, and it felt like the perfect time. The lack of crowds was a massive bonus. Plus, the weather was nice and cool, ideal for a bit of walking without getting all hot and bothered. I can imagine it being absolutely heaving with tourists in the summer months.

Now, a little heads-up: the walk from the car park to the Blue Eye is about a kilometre. It’s paved, so it’s easy enough to walk, but there's not a scrap of shade, so bear that in mind if you're visiting on a scorching day. We were fine in March, but I'd definitely recommend bringing a hat and some sun cream if you're going during the summer.

One thing to note, visiting in March meant the restaurant had a very limited offering. They were serving drinks, which was fine for a quick refresher, but the bar was also doing a bit of construction work. So don’t go expecting a full-blown culinary experience if you’re visiting off-season! Still, a cold drink while admiring that view? Can’t complain too much.

I should also mention that there were a few street dogs around, but luckily they were all quite calm and didn't bother us at all. Just be aware of your surroundings, as you would anywhere, and you’ll be fine. They mostly seemed interested in snoozing in the sunshine!

But let's get back to the main attraction – the Blue Eye itself! It’s utterly mesmerising. The water is so clear and the colours are just incredible. It's a natural spring, and the way the light reflects off the water creates this stunning blue hue that's truly unforgettable. ou can see right down to the bottom, and it’s just a fascinating and beautiful sight.

It's the kind of place that makes you feel like you've stumbled across a hidden paradise. A truly tranquil and awe-inspiring spot.

All in all, I highly recommend a visit to The Blue Eye. Even with the limited restaurant options and the slightly long walk, it's well worth the effort. Just remember to plan your visit accordingly and be prepared for a bit of a trek in the sun.

A must-see...

Review of the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër)

The Blue Eye, or Syri i Kaltër, is an awe-inspiring natural spring that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. Nestled in the heart of southern Albania, this captivating oasis is renowned for its crystal-clear waters that radiate a mesmerizing shade of deep blue, giving it the name "Blue Eye." The spring's depth exceeds 50 meters, and watching the water bubble up from its mysterious depths is nothing short of enchanting.

The journey to the Blue Eye is as delightful as the destination itself. We opted for the KMG Blue Eye shuttle bus tour, which provided an efficient and comfortable 30-minute ride in a modern, air-conditioned shuttle. The convenience and ease of this service made the trip stress-free, allowing us to fully appreciate the scenic beauty of the area.

Upon arrival, it's just a short and pleasant 30-minute walk to the spring. As we approached, the vibrant colors and tranquility of the surroundings began to unfold, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience. The Blue Eye is not only a visual wonder but also a refreshing oasis; the water is so pure that it’s safe to drink directly from the source, offering a truly unique and invigorating taste of nature.

For those looking to capture the beauty of the Blue Eye, the on-site restaurant provides a serene spot to relax and take in the view. Here, you can dangle your feet in the cool waters while enjoying a meal or drink, away from the crowds. This setting is perfect for those looking to snap some stunning photos without the hustle of busier areas.

In summary, the Blue Eye is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Albania. Its natural beauty is simply breathtaking, and the entire experience, from the shuttle ride to the serene moments at the water’s edge, is well-organized and thoroughly enjoyable. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a photographer, or simply someone looking to relax in a stunning setting, the Blue Eye will...
