“Symphony of Stones” is a masterpiece sculpted by ancient fire and patient time, a grand natural symphony found in the heart of Garni Gorge. Here, where volcanic forces once reigned, stone columns rise like giant organ pipes, singing silently of the Earth’s primeval power. Each hexagonal basalt column, formed millions of years ago, is a testament to geological artistry, cooled lava contracting and cracking, shaping these remarkable formations in patterns as regular and mesmerizing as a great cathedral’s arches. Science marvels at this phenomenon known as “columnar jointing,” where towering stones, reaching heights of up to 50 meters, stand in perfect, otherworldly symmetry.

The visual splendor of the Symphony of Stones is as arresting as it is timeless. Dark gray and charcoal-hued columns emerge from the lush greens of Garni Gorge, blending nature’s rugged and soft elements into a harmonious whole. This surreal landscape captivates the eye and stirs the soul, inspiring artists, poets, and photographers drawn to its grandeur and its silence, as if the stones themselves are holding a secret. Here, visitors feel as if they are standing within a massive stone cathedral, one built by nature’s own hands, a place where rock sings in shadow and light.

Nestled near the ancientGarni Temple, a pagan relic from the 1st century AD, this geological marvel offers travelers a rare pairing of human history and natural wonder. The Symphony of Stones and Garni Temple together craft a cultural and natural immersion, inviting travelers to hike through the gorge, to see the towering columns up close, or to savor the breathtaking panorama from higher trails.

In the Symphony of Stones, science, art, and history unite. Armenia’s rugged beauty and ancient spirit live in these grand basalt columns, offering visitors a journey that is as powerful as it is unforgettable, an invitation to witness one of nature’s most extraordinary formations, a natural symphony forever...

This destination is an absolute must-visit on any Armenia tour, and after experiencing it firsthand, I can see why. I initially expected just another scenic spot, similar to many I’ve seen before, but nothing could have prepared me for the breathtaking beauty of this place. No picture can truly capture the magic of being there.

During my visit, the landscape was draped in a stunning blanket of white snow, turning the natural formations into a mesmerizing masterpiece of nature’s craftsmanship. To enter, you’ll need a ticket, and while Yandex Go provides an affordable way to get there, I strongly recommend planning your return in advance. Since many Yandex cars don’t service this remote area frequently, we ended up waiting quite a while for a ride back.

The site itself is a marvel—a breathtaking descent into a valley where the mountain slopes have been naturally sculpted into extraordinary shapes. A river flows gracefully through the landscape, adding to the serene atmosphere, while mountain-sized dogs and ornamental fish enhance the surreal beauty of the surroundings.

One thing to keep in mind—the climb back up is no easy feat! On my way down, I noticed a girl sitting at the entrance, exhausted, and only realized why when I had to make my way back up. Yet, despite the challenge, the winter setting made the entire experience feel even more magical.

The crisp mountain air, the soothing sound of the river, and the refreshing cold will stay with me forever as some of the most unforgettable moments of my journey. If you ever have the chance to visit, don’t hesitate—you’ll cherish this experience...

Nature’s masterpiece – the Symphony of Stones is surreal

The Symphony of Stones is one of Armenia’s most fascinating natural wonders. Located in the Garni Gorge, not far from the famous Garni Temple, this geological formation looks almost man-made—but it’s entirely the work of nature.

Towering columns of hexagonal basalt rise like an enormous organ carved into the cliffside. These symmetrical pillars were formed millions of years ago as a result of cooling and contracting lava flows, creating a natural pattern that resembles organ pipes or a giant honeycomb. The site gets its poetic name—Symphony of Stones—because of this musical, architectural look.

Walking along the base of the cliff, you’re surrounded by these towering geometric formations, and it truly feels like you’re in a natural cathedral. There’s also a beautiful river running through the gorge, adding to the tranquil atmosphere.

You can reach the site by walking or driving down a steep road from Garni Temple. It’s not a long distance, but the road can be rough, so wear comfortable shoes or consider a 4x4 if you’re driving. You’ll also see a small waterfall nearby, and the whole area is perfect for a quiet, meditative walk or photography.

🎵 Tip: Try clapping or making a sound—the acoustics bouncing off the basalt walls really do echo like a symphony.

This place is a must-see for geology lovers, photographers, and anyone who appreciates the raw, artistic power of nature. Make sure to include it in your trip to Garni...

#kickyjanetravels #kickyjane_video

Who knew if you go on an overnight train from Tbilisi, Georgia to Armenia you would wake up to an underrated destination in Eurasia/ the Southern Caucasus. I found my experience in the overnight train pretty interesting. I booked a sleeping compartment and had to share with one other person as a solo traveler. There is no female compartments, but I went with it. However I met a new friend and my worries were eliminated. . Next I woke up to a new country my 67th country @armenia.travel where I got to see a UNESCO World Heritage site, so a day trip with @getyourguide to explore Garni Temple, Gerghard Monastery, and see a hidden gem of basalt columns called the Symphony of Stones, that reminded me of the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland. . In three days and two nights I fit in a lot to try and learn more about Armenia. I visited the Armenian Genocide Museum and monument as well. Not only that I got to experience the Armenian National Ballet at the National Ballet and Opera Theatre. If you are looking to experience some art be sure to visit the Cascade Complex a massive staircase with 6 terraces filled with art, sculptures, and the @cca.yerevan.official before heading to watch sunset from the Memorial to the 50th Anniversary of October Revolution. . Armenia is filled with cool cafes, great food, and it felt safe traveling there solo. Fun facts about Armenia I learned. . 1) Yerevan is one of the oldest cities in the world. Founded in 782 BC. 2) Armenia has its’ own alphabet. 3) They say it is the first country to adopt Christianity. I didn’t know much about this region, but it truly made me want to go back to learn more and visit the many monasteries as well as Mt Ararat and Lake Sevan. . When you think of Armenia what do you think? For me I found it a place I for sure want to come back to visit more of. . This country is full of surprises and while it maybe small it has a lot to offer. Way more than I could fit in 3 days. .
