When it comes to Australia's wars, some people might wonder what wars Australia has fought in. In fact, Australia has participated in many significant wars, including being one of the Allies in both World War I and World War II. Dr. Kwong Chi Man, Assistant Professor of History at Hong Kong Baptist University, explained in an interview with BBC Chinese that, "This was one of the deployments to strengthen the Asian front of the Allies... The Allies' calculation was that Australian troops were heading to Malaya, American troops were going to the Philippines, and if Canada also sent troops, it would create international pressure to deter Japan." Therefore, unlike historical museums in Europe, here you will see more about the war situation in this region, including Singapore, Malaysia, and others. Another difference is that there is a greater display of the weapons used at the time. Perhaps because when I visited museums about World War II, it was in Germany. So the content didn't mention the weapons used, but rather focused on the origins of the war, the conflicts at the time, the development of the war, and the horrific concentration camps.

One of the most stunning and striking places in all of Australia, the feeling are overwhelmingly sad but great to see the tribute and remembering those that sacrifice their lives for us from the ANZACS to the allies, nurses and anyone that fought in the war for Australia and New Zealand. The information and displays are incredible and intensely detailed, well preserved war artefacts and items belonging to all sides of the conflict and representing all the different divisions of war, the designs and layout is so well illustrated and easy to navigate for any ages and physical abilities. Plenty of helpful and friendly staff to assist you, group tours are free, the iconic poppy on the plaques for the fallen are must do and something from yourself to contribute and be apart of the memorial. I’ve already said a lot about this place, it’s a must visit at least once in your life time either you’re an Aussie/Kiwi or visiting the area, it’s FREE ENTRY and the views from the memorial are breathtaking looking onto Anzac Parade and Australian Parliament House (new and old), you can easily walk there and bus there, parking is available onsite and enjoy a relaxing coffee at their cafe with a whole lot of interesting information surrounding it. This place is literally for anyone absolutely no excuses not to visit doesn’t matter if you’re 8 or 88 years old!

The Australian War Memorial is an incredibly moving and profound tribute to the sacrifices made by our service men and women. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, but it’s the First World War gallery that stands out as particularly poignant. The attention to detail, the personal stories, and the preserved artifacts bring the enormity of that conflict into sharp focus. Walking through those galleries, you can almost feel the weight of history and the incredible courage shown during that time. The highlight of my visit was the Last Post ceremony. Held every evening at 4:45 pm, it’s a deeply respectful tribute to a soldier from the Roll of Honour, with their name read aloud as part of the ceremony. The solemnity of the bugle call and the respectful silence create an atmosphere that’s both reverent and incredibly emotional. Witnessing this ceremony, especially in the context of the First World War’s significance, leaves a lasting impact and a deep sense of gratitude. The Australian War Memorial is far more than a museum—it’s a place of remembrance, reflection, and national pride. If you visit, make sure to stay for the Last Post ceremony, as it truly brings the stories of sacrifice and service to life. This experience will stay with you long after you leave.

This is one place that will need your undivided attention. It is huge, expansive and exhaustive, in a good way and beautifully constructed and maintained. The staff here is very friendly and very courteous. There are incredible artefacts in there which have been painstakingly restored and displayed, which is magnificent to watch. Do please spend more than a few hours here, if you really want to understand how our soldiers performed their duties in the trying conditions during all the past conflicts. They have also done their best to highlight their personalities as well during the conflicts and how difficult it was not just for those on the battlefield, but also for those who are back home. In the end, I was left speechless, humbled and unable to articulate my emotions. If you have a child, then this is a great place to educate them about past history, and the conflicts and the associated horrors. There are a lot of interactive displays to engage the young minds. Also advisable is the 50 minutes guided tour that is highly recommended. Do be ready to walk a lot, as there is a lot of sections that will vie for your attention. And don’t forget to pick up a souvenir from the gift shop, as the proceeds will go directly to the veterans foundation.

The Australian War Memorial is a profound tribute to the sacrifices of Australian servicemen and women. Located in Canberra, it effectively combines a museum with a memorial, showcasing an extensive collection of artifacts and personal stories that illuminate Australia’s military history from World War I to the present. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, offering visitors a deep, emotional connection to the experiences of those who served. The architecture itself is impressive, creating a solemn yet reflective atmosphere. Events like ANZAC Day draw large crowds, reinforcing its importance as a place of remembrance. Additionally, the memorial’s commitment to research and education enhances its role in fostering understanding of Australia’s wartime experiences. Overall, the Australian War Memorial is a must-visit for anyone seeking to honor and comprehend the impact of war on Australian society.
