Excellent Museum, located in Australia's Capital city of Canberra. The grounds and parklands were covered in knitted poppies to commemorate those whom have fallen in wars, the poppy was inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields" by Canadian physician Jogn McCrae 1915. In Australia, the Poppies have been used since 1921 and traditionally worn on armistice day or rememberence day on November 11 to commemorate those that died in WW1 however the poppies are also worn on our Anzac Day 25th April. The poppy has been adopted universally to now represent all those whom have sacrificed their lives as servicemen and women. The shrine at the museum is spectacular as the walls are paved in mosaic tiles, the glass stained glass dome at the apex of the shrine is very beautiful and the light shines down into the cooler, reverent interior making the enclosure appear larger than it seems. Inside the carefully laid out museum, you can meander thru the time periods of war, each time slot depicting the artifacts of the day in use. Visual and Audio shows screen regularly throughout the day. If you are not sure where to locate certain items you would like to see, ask the very obliging museum attendants on hand, many are veterans and hold a wealth of knowledge. The overall grounds and shrine stare down over Australia's parliament house in the distance and l can only hope the inhabitants within occasionally look up to the shrine to remember those who gave of themselves so we could all be free! I urge every Australian and international visitor to visit the museum if you are passing...
Read moreWhen it comes to Australia's wars, some people might wonder what wars Australia has fought in. In fact, Australia has participated in many significant wars, including being one of the Allies in both World War I and World War II.
Dr. Kwong Chi Man, Assistant Professor of History at Hong Kong Baptist University, explained in an interview with BBC Chinese that, "This was one of the deployments to strengthen the Asian front of the Allies... The Allies' calculation was that Australian troops were heading to Malaya, American troops were going to the Philippines, and if Canada also sent troops, it would create international pressure to deter Japan."
Therefore, unlike historical museums in Europe, here you will see more about the war situation in this region, including Singapore, Malaysia, and others.
Another difference is that there is a greater display of the weapons used at the time. Perhaps because when I visited museums about World War II, it was in Germany. So the content didn't mention the weapons used, but rather focused on the origins of the war, the conflicts at the time, the development of the war, and the horrific concentration camps.
