The sheer volume of water moving over and down the Buckley falls simply astounded me. Only once have I seen it in more majestic form. The year was 1995 and my younger brother was just short of his second birthday. As I seem to recall, the lower areas of the kmart carpark and the area they hold the Sunday market at were already submerged and only going further under water. My mother gathered us three children into the pale blue VP Commodore and took off for Geelong. The anticipation grew as we raced along the Surfcoast Highway of which the duplication of said road was only completed two years prior. The mood and hype reached fever pitch as we crested Scenic rd and headed down toward the river that would be our final prize. The small carpark just above the lookouts at Buckley Falls was bursting at the seams, it looks like word has got out that the ol' falls are raging like never before. My gosh was the air alive with the static only a crowd stirred up by a foaming waterfall can produce. The water was raging downstream like a stampede of Wildebeest as they bustle to be first to the new growth in the lush Okavango delta. As the light began to dim and my mother herded us back into the car for the drive home I remember thinking 'This is a moment that will live in infamy. This is a moment I will not forget.'

Read moreAs others have said, this is a underutilised natural beauty that, as a local, you easily forget exists. Much is said about Mossman Gorge and other similar rock pool experiences (that I've raved about on TA) but this is a really pleasant day out.Our three kids, 8, 5 and 2 loved the short walk from the car park (only about 200-300m but not wheelchair accessible). Along the way there were lots of little geckos to spot and watch scurry away. Probably worth being mindful of snakes also, however we didn't see any!Between the car park and the falls is small clearing with river views that has picnic tables for your packed lunches. There's also higher vantage points to visit for nice views too. It'd be enjoyable in any weather apart from pouring rain (even then the rapids might be impressive!). I wouldn't bother packing swimming gear though - i don't think it'd be safe enough for that. The "falls" are more rocky rapids that are often placid (unless recent rains) with plenty of step-rocks across ponds for them to master (and inevitably miss with wet feet/shoes as a result!). "Nevermind, it's only a short walk to the car - take your shoes off for a while".A fantastic day with the kids (or quiet and relaxing for a solo wander/couple). There's often only 1-2 other...
Read moreI've lived here for over 20 years and even though I've heard of the place I've never been and oh my god it's amazing. Look there isn't anything I can say here that hasn't already been covered a bunch of times but this place is gorgeous, absolutely brilliant. It's got your nice path areas with 4 million steps, it's got great picnic spots and tables and some nice laid out trails to wander around. But it's also got no tail just "go for it" areas too. I went here with my daughter and it was raining and we had a full on adventure, we ran over rocks by the river bank, watched the water foam up and go crazy over the "rapids" and explored places the obvious used to be something but have long been ignored. Things to take note of, this is what it is, there aren't shops or anything so what you take is what you'll have. Steps, steps and more steps. Water makes things slippery and the paths aren't really designed for people who have mobility issues. But if you don't mind rocky paths and exploring, I highly...
