This was the first main stop on our family (2 ad + 2 tweens) holiday to complete The Dinosaur Trail. The dinosaurs weren't the main component of the discovery centre though, which was surprising, but we loved it anyway. The level of detail and information about the history of sheep and cattle in the area was well done, informative and very interesting, and the staff were nice and helpful. When discussing our favourite part of the centre, we all said "The Porcupine Gorge Theatre". We are so glad we visited the gorge before visiting the discovery centre. The porcupine gorge theatre was a beautifully presented story of the formation of the gorge!
My only disappointment was the lack of much (if any) indigenous history in the area. It is present around the town, especially in the beautiful Eco Walk, but quite distinctly lacking at the...
Read moreStaff here friendly and helpful. The museum is not as extensive as Richmond or those in Winton and it’s a long way to get here. They do have a full size skeleton model which puts these animals in perspective. The staff will happily tell you about the sight-seeing options like the ancient Porcupine Gorge and the Mt Walker lookouts. For travelers, sadly what they don’t tell you is that the 60kph zones extended WAY out of town (particularly the south/east side) and so far that you think you’ve missed the signs. Also it’s easy to miss them in the way in and there are CAMERAS right on the spot. Doing 70+kph in a 60 zone is...
Read moreFriendly and helpful staff, giving us a decent travel map of Queensland, and kindly allowing us free entry into the centre, as the air conditioning wasn't working at the time. Was an impressive sized dinosaur on display that was the highlight of the experience. Lots of fascinating fossils on display too, and a souvenir shop at the front, for those wanting to take home a memento. Drop in if you are passing through! Outside are some metal art pterasaurs as well, and nearby is a life-sized statue of the muttaburrasaurus. Not much else happening in Hughenden, it seemed, but was an interesting little...
