The Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum is a true testament to Australia's rich industrial heritage and deserves high praise for its historical significance, educational value, and immersive experience. Located in Lithgow, New South Wales, this museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the country's firearms manufacturing history and pays homage to the skilled workers who contributed to the nation's defense.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum is its historical significance. The museum is housed in the original buildings of the Lithgow Small Arms Factory, which played a crucial role in Australia's defense industry from 1912 to 1991. Stepping inside the museum feels like a journey back in time, allowing visitors to explore the factory's workshops, assembly lines, and display areas that showcase an impressive collection of firearms, machinery, and artifacts.

Beyond its historical significance, the museum offers exceptional educational value. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about the evolution of firearms manufacturing, the important role the Lithgow Small Arms Factory played during times of conflict, and the impact it had on the local community. The museum provides informative displays, interactive exhibits, and knowledgeable guides who are eager to share their expertise and answer questions. This educational experience is invaluable, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Australia's industrial history and the significant contributions made by the factory workers.

What sets the Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum apart is its immersive experience. The museum has carefully preserved the factory's original architecture, machinery, and workspaces, creating an authentic atmosphere that immerses visitors in the daily life of the factory. Walking through the workshops and seeing the tools and equipment used by the skilled workers provides a unique insight into the manufacturing process and the dedication required to produce firearms of the highest quality.

In conclusion, the Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum stands as a remarkable tribute to Australia's industrial heritage. Its historical significance, educational value, and immersive experience make it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, firearms enthusiasts, and anyone interested in Australia's defense industry. The museum's dedication to preserving and sharing this important chapter of the nation's history ensures that future generations can appreciate the craftsmanship, innovation, and commitment of the factory workers who contributed to...

Extensive collection of firearms and antique machinery used on the production line. The museum has 5 main areas with 4 in the main building and 1 in a factory shed a short walk away. The staff were all very friendly and gave us a good overview of what to expect in each area when we entered.

Pricing: $10 (adults), $7 (students), $5 (children) Parking: free Accessibility: Wheelchair ramp beside parking area

The main collection (1F main building) includes domestically produced antique and modern rifles alongside a reference collection of foreign weapons (M16, AK47, FALs, FN MAG etc). An entire wall is dedicated to light machine guns from WW1/2. Also features a smaller assortment of heavy weaponry like heavy machine guns, mortars and rocket launchers. Has a large cutaway section of a FN FAL and 4 guns that can be handled.

The secondary collection (2F main building) was donated and comprises predominantly pistols with a few rare rifles. The highlight for me in this section was a real De Lisle carbine. The collection includes flintlocks, antique revolvers, dueling pistols, modern sporting pistols, unique modern pistols (Desert Eagles, Lugers, 1911s etc) and a massive SMLE display.

A short walk from the main building is a machine shed which contains ~30 antique firearm factory machines some of which are 100 years old. We were guided by Brian, a very knowledgeable and friendly volunteer who introduced and explained the inner workings of all 30 machines. Having someone this knowledgeable entertaining our questions and demonstrating how these machines worked for our entire time there made for a really memorable experience (thank you). It was fascinating to see how these machines functioned and how many of them could still be operated. Included were lathes, mills, drills, presses and electrical generators. There was also a manual switchboard which you could interact with which I have only ever seen in old movies.

There are also 2 areas in the museum which detail the working life of Australian women in the factories during WW2 and a whole collection of random items that the factory helped produce that were not firearms (stand mixers, tradie tools etc). A small section also shows cutaways of ammunition and mortar rounds. Was really cool to know that the factory helped manufacture tanks for the Leopard 1 MBT.

Would highly recommend checking this museum out if you are in Lithgow or the...

Unfortunately, I was unable to visit the museum due to the recent security incident, which I share my condolences to the curator and staff. But I wanted to write my review in regards of the museum's shop. I had recently ordered a large SMLE poster from their online store, which I had it arranged to be delivered to my hotel room, and I must say that I am very happy with the poster and the service that the team at the Lithgow museum! As a fan of the world famous SMLE rifle, it was really an incredible opportunity for me to get something straight from the ordinance factory itself and can seriously recommend (and strongly suggest) all fans and history lovers to please support the museum and purchase something that really fancies you. My message to the museum team, thank you so much for your help and your poster, I truly hope that you all can open your doors again someday for me to come visit and that you can recover your collections, I really was bummed out that it wasn't possible to visit the museum as it was one of the things I'd hoped to do while visiting NSW. I definitely intend to purchase from you all again one...

About 10-15mins walk from the train station. Very nice people that'll greet you up front. Artefacts are organised. They have very interesting items on the gift shop, useful for camping. I enjoyed the stroll around since I was addicted to action games such as PUBG MOBILE and CALL OF DUTY MOBILE that involves guns. Very intriguing to see them guns up close, especially the small pistols☺️. There were some war propagandas that reminded me of essays back in high school, made me sit there and analyse a little bit😆. Seeing them old switchboards and communication equipment blows my mind, seeing them up close just made me curious with how much it changed after a century. I'm an apprentice sparky so I showed them to the people I worked with and they're intrigued aswell. Would love to come back and have my family to tour.

I thought I'd done a review for Lithgow small arms factory! But I don't mind doing another one as it's such a great place to visit. It was closed on the day we were at the blue mountains so had to hire a car to go back the next day. A town that grew because of the factory. We travelled half way round the world to find the birthplace of some of the most famous arms of the world. It did make other items and the museum has made the most of the social history, which is what I like the most, so can't big this place up enough. The volunteers are amazing and knowledgeable. This place must stay as a place to visit to keep the town alive. It must not end up as a housing development! If I win the lottery this would be one if the first places I would donate to, to keep the museum alive.

EVERYONE needs to come here. It is excellent and I believe will get better. The details around the history of the site and the manufacturing that occurred here is great. The volunteers there really care about the information and what they are doing. It is done really well and is very interesting. The gun collection has is amazing in Itself but the history of manufacturing that occurred here is amazing. This was at one time the largest small arms manufacturing factory in the southern hemisphere. They have set up as many old pieces of machinery that they can and intend to get some of them working - this is an amazing piece of history and should be HERITAGE listed. A great visit for anyone - get out there - take your children, take your mother - take your wife.
